CubaseSX3 + Intel Quad Core

Who's using a Quad core system with Cubaase?

I'm finding that having to bounce a fair few tracks to audio is impacting on my creativity in that I cant edit all the tracks at the same time live.

I'm using a P4HT 3.2Ghz with 2GB RAM, I thought this was enough but with all the effects/EQ'ing I am doing on each track it dosnt seem to be.

I think I need to upgrade but wanted to know if it really is a 4x improvement on what I currently have.

I triec installing CubaseSX3 on my freinds quad core vista 64 bit machine with 8GB of RAM, it kept crashing though so was unable to test my projects,Im sure I could get it stable withsome tweaking but just wanted to know in general what kind of performance increase we're talking////

I recently bought a new producing computer, a Core 2 Quad 2,4GHz with 4GB Ram and I'm a Cubase user. Allthough I still use Cubase SX 2.0 wich I have been using for a long time, but I need to upgrade to Cubase 4.1 soon if I are about the fully use the Quad processor since no version be before 4.1 supports multi-core processors. But I must admit, even though my Cubase doens't use all the processors yet because of my Cubase version I gotta say I am in heaven when I produce now haha. So far I haven't reached the cpu-limit by any means (allthough there is 16+ VSTi's running at the same time; Atmosphere, z3ta+ etc. + VST FX) I can't imagine how awesome it'll be when I upgrade to 4.1, but I guess SX 2 will do for a while more though.

I am on quad and cubase sx 3. Upgrading to sx 4 soon. What can I say.. More than enough power for me, can't complain at all.

Just to chime in on the Quad core debate.

I went from Cubase on a PC with a single-core 3.2 hyperthreaded CPU to Logic on a Mac Pro with 2 Dual Core 2.66 Xeon Processors (4 cores total). I'm not even close to using up all the power and thats with multiple instances of Space Designer Reverb and almost all parts from VST's.

Needless to say, 4 cores is more than enough for even very complex arrangements.

P.S. Imagine picking up one of those new 8 core Mac Pro's! It probably be a cold day in hell before you utilized more than 20% of your machines total processing power!

Sounds good.

I've wondered how all producers have coped in the past, I suppose they did allot of bouncing, had patience and probably had some hardware support on the side.

I think I'm going to look at upgrading from the sounds of the performance gained.

I upgraded to a 2.4ghz Quad about 6 months ago. It took me a lot of convincing but it is the best thing I have ever done. I have it overclocked to 2.8ghz with insane cooling and my CPU usage sits at around 12% - 15% under super heavy load in Cubase (SX3). I rewire my drums from Reason but unfortunately Reason doesn't work outside a single core. So what I do then is change the affinity so that Reason sits in the 4th core and Cubase sits in the 1st 3 cores and it runs like a dream. With the CPU, overclocked RAM, Raided Raptor hard disks you would expect it too!!!!

So does SX3 use dual and quad cores or is it only Cubase 4 that will take advantage of this? I'm a little confused when it comes to this, as I hear of people with DC/QC's running SX3 and saying how fast it is (as above)....

I've never been able to find official word on it, but I would assume SX3 does support multi core, just on the basis of watching the CPU graph's in task manager. When I have Cubase open, each of 4 graphs (one for each core) seem to be using about the same amount...

cubase has among the best multicore support, because it was built this way from the very beginning. i have a core2 and it is FAR more than i need. your system is also very responsive, as the load is more balanced.

Because of money and school I'm using a laptop as my production PC. I just went from using a centrino 2ghz to a 2.2 core 2 duo.

Ableton 7 runs very nicely, I can get plenty of instances of my fav synths without getting bogged down
