Nevada Debate Thread

Obama is reallllly struggling tonight.

Started off very awkward with the questions about race, but Hillary has responded very well and appropriately.

But then they moved on to biggest weakness as a candidate, and Obama said that he is "not a very good executive manager" and "will rely on having good people around him" and Hillary hit him really hard. After all, she says, the President is the Chief Executive of government.

Obama is responding now, saying that he's sure G. W. has never lost a piece of paper (aka good executive management) but that he has still failed as President because having a good vision and plan is more important. Hard to argue with that, but it was definitely a stumble.

Edwards is good, but is he still relevant?

This debate is truly phenomenal. For those that are missing it, do catch the repeat they're showing on MSNBC tomorrow.

I am really really pleased to have these three candidates to choose from. Normally after watching an episode or two of the West Wing (which I did today), I get really depressed about the reality of politics. Tonight, however, we have three candidates that are really on.

I'm praying that Edwards drops out and asks his supporters to support Obama. I think an Obama/Edwards ticket would be awesome...and would absolutely destroy the Hildabeast.

It is extraordinarily difficult to take anything you say seriously.

And it is extraordinarily tiring to read again and again on this forum vague attacks against Hillary that amount more to slander than anything substantive. The blind, seething rage toward a candidate is stupid unless you actually know what she stands for. Attack her on her merits, not on the fact that she is a woman please.

The hildabeast has no merits. I attack it because it is a fake, contrived, power hungry monster. It has 50 advisors and is completely poll driven. The only principle behind the hildabeast is a vague desire for "fairness" in the world...to be brought about of course by increased federal power, more taxation, and more control over our lives.

The hildabeast has always been driven by a lust for power...and is willing to step on anyone to get it.

It must be stopped at all costs.

Right, and you've proven yet again that you know absolutely nothing about American politics. Not only that, but your obsession with using demeaning language based on appearance shows that you might be using gender as a factor in reaching your opinion. Way to be. A true American patriot is you.

Anyway, some of the highlights from the debate, according to TPM:

I would have included a lot more from the second hour and a lot less from the first half hour... but that's the media for you.

It has nothing to do with gender...Hillary's policies are monstrous. She would make Stalin proud on economic policy. I just watched this woman on CNBC and it was freaking unbelievable what she is proposing. First of all..tax hikes on the rich and on businesses (duh)...more regulation of the home lending industry...a 3-6 month moratorium (freeze) on foreclosures + a FIVE YEAR FREEZE on mortgage interest rates...possible federal caps on energy prices...the government passing out checks for $650 to pay people's energy bills...WTF WTF WTF...I have never seen such a blatant socialist streak in anyone running for President. It is vote buying and heavy-handed government at its worst.

Her ideas would create huge market distortions and make a bad situation even worse. I don't like Hillary because she would be an absolute disaster. It has nothing to do with being a woman.

Ezra Klein:

quote:
I've always found Clinton hatred a bit of a baffling phenomenon. At times, I've disliked the political timidity of the Clintons, or thought that Bill Clinton allowed his personal appetites to overwhelm his public duties to the detriment of the country, or felt that Hillary Clinton approached the presidency too much like a middle manager and too little like a director, but I've never gotten the hatred. Which is why Andrew Sullivan's blog has been particularly fascinating this year. Read his liveblogging of last night's debate. Edwards never even makes an appearance. Obama, who Andrew is deeply committed to, hardly even qualifies as a walk-on character. Instead, it's Clinton. It's Clinton and Clinton and Clinton and Clinton. At 9:30 we learn that "Just like Bush, she cannot talk about her own weakness." At 9:50 she "manages to pivot the sub-prime mess to pander to blacks, Asians and Hispanics...Her tone is a little hectoring as well." At 10:57 we learn "You have to understand that she can tell lies almost as well as her husband."

This isn't, mind you, an article on Hillary Clinton. It's a debate analysis. And it's fascinating, because it's the real world thought processes of someone who genuinely loathes Hillary Clinton. Everything becomes evidence of personal cynicism and ambition. Nothing is a slip, or harmless, or just politics. Every word, gesture, and political feint is evidence of Shakespearian levels of cynicism and power-lust. And this belief in the Manichean size of her traits makes her the center of gravity. Her failures are so deep, her appetite for conquest so epic, that everything must revolve around her story. I watched the debate and saw her and Obama basically did equally well, which, given the dynamics of the race, was a win for her. Edwards came off as likable and committed, but didn't do much to insert himself into the storyline. Sullivan watched and saw...Clinton. A particular version of Clinton, but Clinton nevertheless. It's a whole different way of experiencing politics.

And additional commentary at TPM:

quote:
Ezra is talking solely about Andrew Sullivan's view of Hillary here. What's really sobering about this, though, is that this very same disease -- albeit somewhat less virulent strains of it, perhaps -- also infects a surprising number of professional pundits, commentators, and, occasionally, reporters, to the point where it has had a dramatic impact on the political conversation in this country.

At this point it's necessary to add the obligatory caveats: Yes, the Clintons are ambitious. No, Hillary isn't merely a martyr. Yes, Hillary's team manages and manipulates the press. No, Hillary is not without blame for her treatment at the hands of the media. Yes, plenty of commentators and reporters don't subscribe to this view of her.

But all this aside, the degree to which this grotesque house-of-horrors view of Hillary has permeated so much of our political discourse really is astonishing. Equally bizarre is the fact that it's just an accepted part of our political lives at this point. Worth pondering.

i think youre just gonna have to deal with the Hillary bashing...at least until Obama gets nominated.

the Clintons lie. this is not news. they lie, triagulate, pander and smear better (or worse) than anyone in the business.

i want to see a woman in the Whitehouse just as bad as anyone else, just not her.

never was. the most un-serious Presidential candidate since Ted Kennedy 1979.

everything that has happened since Iowa only serves to stroke his ginormous ego.

he should drop like a dirty shirt. the sooner the better.

Hildabeast is an appropriate tag. Lol! Haven't heard that one. God help us all if the fools nominate her. Anyhow, she's easily defeatable like Obama, but GOP has to come up with a player.
