What DAW software to use with my Virus TI

Hi,

I have recently purchased a Virus TI synth having been working on Reason for years. Obviously this means a double learning curve as I now need to switch to a DAW that supports VST's.

I have been experimenting with various options of late and still undecided. I thought Cubase was the way forward but then realised I can't create drum patterns like I used to in Reason. Now I need a drum vst. Plus Cubase looks like massive learning curve.

Then I tried FL Studio which I've used in the past but I have a problem with Virus Control. There is latency when using Virus control which isn't there in Cubase and also isn't there in FL when I use a different VST like Vanguard. I also hate the Piano Roll compared with other sequencers.

So my question is...
1. Should I stick to Cubase, purchase a drum VST (looking at Guru and Battery 3) plus Native Bundle for side chaining.
2. Switch to FL Studio, figure out the latency problem (I'm told this may be normal) and deal with the piano roll.
3. Try a different DAW altogether - ProTools or something.

I basically want something that is as close to the Reason sequencer as possible.

you should rewire reason and use it as an instrument rack. this way you can still use redrum. if you want to rewire, don't use cubase. cuabse 4 no longer has stereo REWIRE for some absolutely retarded reason.

fl has many problems and is being left behind, in my oppinion. i wouldn't recommend it to most people. from what i can tell, the problem you are experiencing with fl is due to the fact that it has no proper automatic plugin delay compensation. this is a total pain in the scrotum and is one of the reasons i think fl is dead - along with real sidechaining and better dual/quad core support. people have been whinging about this for a long time, but nothing has changed. i think fl is no longer a daw, but has become an instrument, like reason or guru.

i think ableton will suit you best. it is resource heavy, but it has a fantastic rewire implementation. it is also a better workflow for alot of things than cubase. i wouldn't want to use ableton for working with audio/recording though, as the tools are rather primitive compared to cubase/sonar.

sonar is a fantastic daw, but alot of people find the workflow to be totally fucked up. if you can get over that, this is also a very good option. i would say sonar is actually the most feature rich daw on the market, i just can't stand using it haha.

protools isn't really ideal for making dance music. it can be done, but it is geared more towards recording.

If you're based on PC, go with Cubase.
If you're running a Mac, go Logic 8.

Virus Control works pretty well these days under both. Personally I would only use virus control for sound design and patch management, I prefer to use the Virus through it's analog outs as a traditional h/w synth which is just routed straight into my sound-card. This can then be used with Logic Aux channels or Cubase External Instrument setup.

Drum programming shouldn't be a problem with the right tools.
I use Battery 2 (never bothered with 3) and RMiv (which I prefer).
I often use single hits and loops via an audio-track or from some loop mangling program like Reflex. THere is also Guru, Stylus RMX etc for percussion and loops.

Thanks for the quick response chaps.

I have a problem with Reason rewire. I purchased version 4, upgraded to Vista and still on the old version of Cubase SX3. Reason will not rewire with Cubase SX3. Possibly OS problem although the Cubase website suggests SX3 will run on Vista although not supported. FL Studio rewires no probs.

The 4 things I miss most in Reason are Redrum, Dr Rex, ease of side chaining & the sequencer. Guru seems to be close enough to redrum and also plays rex files. I've been told I can side chain with the TC Works Native bundle. If I can learn the sequencer with ease then I think I will stick with Cubase.

The wiring in Cubase looks complex - creating busses and all that rubbish!!

Virus control doesn't work well with Ableton either.
The only hosts that work really well with the Virus are Cubase and Logic.

I use my Polar TI with Sonar 7PE. I also have Cubase (SL3 and Studio 4), but I like Sonar's workflow, features, and (especially) support MUCH better than Cluelessbase.

Sonar 7PE's new features make it an electronica-producing beast - step sequencer (great for drums/arps), customizable MIDI tools, and it comes with Z3TA+, a phenomenal synth.

As you noted, just be aware that since you're coming from FLS and/or Reason, you've got a massive learning curve ahead of you whether you go with Cubase, Sonar, PT, etc. You mentioned PT - I'd avoid that one altogether. PT is great for mixing, but its MIDI capabilities are far below that of Sonar, Cubase, Live, or Logic.

you only have mono rewire. you then have to route them to stereo busses. tbh, i think cubase 4 is a completely shit product. i don't like steinberg. who the fuck omits something like this from their NEW software, when it was fine in the version that preceeded it?! i also find it hilarious that they developed mediabay before real sidechaining and fixing this rewire problem, heh. my guess is 19/20 people don't even use mediabay. i wish sonar wasn't so god damn unintuitive, then i'd sell this steinberg crap.

grumble...

Um, you wrote stereo sidechaining. Obviously a mistake, but it confused me.
Stereo rewire (Apart from the first channel) wasn't an official documented feature of Cubase SX3.
They removed it because it was very buggy. I'm sure they will reimplement it soon.

You tried the v2 version of Reaper yet? It's getting better and better - more of my vsti working with it.
