One thing I've noticed over many years of looking at forums such as this is that, with the recent proliferation of home studios, it seems that more and more people refer to themselves as "producers" and it seems that fewer people refer to themselves as "musicians." Now, I'm the kind of person who believes that there is no clear-cut boundary between the two definitions, so I'm curious to know how some of you define yourselves and why.

1. the word producer makes you sound like a fag (like saying "i'm a dj")
2. my technical skills (mixing/mastering) aren't the best, and i have no intention of changing that unless i have to lol

There's different types of musicians (instrument players, composers...) and a producer is one of them, to the extent that his position allows him to be - seeing as some producers are just studio engineers who follow directions while others are one-man projects who compose and create everything themselves. So it's like asking if someone who plays the piano is a pianist or a musician.
That being said, I consider myself a musician in general terms. I also consider myself a producer, which describes my instrument.

I must be a fag then. I've never considered myself a musician, more a techie who has some musical skill.

I consider myself a producer because I don't just play instruments, I program them, program drums, track automate, mix, and master everything. However I am also a musician, and was a musician before I was a producer. A lot of producers are not musicians and sometimes I end up get paid to program the notes for them. =)
