Long Opinion About EDM
One of my friends sent me an article about how "trance is dying" blah blah blah.I have yet to respond to any thread here about it so i figured if i was going to type a response to him i might as well post my feeling on this subject.so here it is:
I think every few years you hear things like this.for instance,i myself have been saying that house is dead for years.(read my interview from a few years ago). And in baltimore it is.
WHY? because while other cities were evolving musically with the EDM scene baltimore was DE-evolving.The baltimore mainstream DJ's here and their reluctance to progress by keeping their thumbs on the promoters and club owners made the baltimore nightlife here stay frozen in time. They wanted to stay and play in an era of music that passed the scene by in the mid nineties.
even the main producer form the basement boys in an interview with the baltimore city paper stated that house was dead in baltimore. The DJ's and producers here are mostly to blame for this.A third of it is the Promoters and club owners fault for not trying new things. And another third of it is the baltimore clubbers themselves by continuing to support these clubs that keep things stale. Now a lot of people can probably say the same thing about their town and scene.just remove the name "baltimore" and put in the city of your choice.
Anybody who knows me knows i have no sympathy for house music and what has happened to the scene here. How can D.C be a huge EDM scene and baltimore, which is right down the road not pick up on where the scene is going and establish themselves a player in the EDM market again??
Now the same thing is being said about trance music that was said about house music. That its dying. And granted you can make a case for it as you can make a case for just about ANY form of EDM.
Afterall, EDM is by nature a progressive production of music.Always evolving, always changing. So can you make a claim that trance is dead?
Sure.
You can also say that house, electro, drum and bass, breaks, ambient, etc are also dying.
But heres whats really happening.Their EVOLVING.
Just as EDM has been doing since its incarnation.EDM of any kind in its purest form will always evolve in some way after a few years. This has never changed nor probably will it.And it SHOULDNT.EDM constantly evolving is one of the reasons i listen to it.Because theres always something interesting going on in the scene to keep the music fresh.you cant say that about other music styles.
Even myself,as a loyal fan of the trance sound, dont play straight up trance music in my sets.Never have. And i actually give half credit to that to the baltimore music scene as they refused to carry trance records in their record stores forcing me to further develope my already started path of my own style of music play.I guarantee youll never hear a "trance"DJ like myself anywhere as i play many different forms of EDM in my sets.
I actually dont consider myself a trance DJ.What i do and always will support about trance is the beat. The BPM.I believe the BPM from trance music is going to be the beat that sets the EDM pace for years to come.I believe as EDM progresses, adapting the BPM of trance is going to be incorporated into many styles of electric music.Your already started to see it (particularly in the world of drum and bass).
So trance dies of in its purest form(some say it already has).Thats ok.I look forward to the evolution. Not just trance, but the entire EDM scene in general. And im sure you are to.The best is yet to come.So stay tuned.....
