how to record a live set - but not the usual noob question
how would i record a set from the record out as well as the house sound.
like most pro live sets with the music and the crowd and drinks clanging together. i want to record something with a live feel.
an example would be most Paul van Dyk live sets hosted on this site =D

One way to get the effect you want is to record with both your line out and with a microphone aimed at the crowd. This gives you a 'clean' version as well as one that captures the acoustics (the mix reproduced by the club audio system, the crowd/environment), and you could mix these to your liking.
This is a speculation on how the sets are recorded.

the only way i can think of is recording both signals separate, then putting them together in ableton. the thing is i don't have two recording devices.
i could bring another mixer with the record out and mic on seperate channels and record from there. but i wont be able to tweak it afterwords.
i do not want the bar tender saying "Last call for beer" in the middle of my set....

theres a couple of portable recorders with multiple channels like the Zoom H2 and H4. never tried recording more than 2 channels though im sure its possible.

Alot of the live sets are simply mic'ed... the mic captures the live audio and the crowd all at once.
This is common practice, classically called "taping" from back in the day when people would set up mics and a reel-to-reel.
A small mixer and a mic / linein feed is one way to go. a laptop with a 3 or more channel USB soundboard is another good option.. 2 (stereo) ins from the mixer and a mic, recording with any decent multitrack recording program.

The ZOOM H2 will record 4 channels, but only in microphone mode. the minute you plug in a line level input, you're stuck with 2 channel recording. i was pissed when I figured that out.
Also, in regards to recording a line level and a stereo microphone to get the 'room' sound... I anticipate that you'll have some pretty nasty phasing issues... the dry record out will come straight in, but the house sound will be delayed through the PA system and coupled with the resonance of the room, the two recordings won't be in 'sync'. you'll really have to be a wizard to get that sounding great together.
