Homemade Studio Desk

I wanted to share some pics of the studio desk I just finished. I have been working on it for several months now when I could find the time.

I designed it on Google Sketchup – a nice free CAD program great for this kind of stuff. I got the design idea from an Omnirax desk I saw on their site. It is made out of cabinet grade birch plywood. The top is made from ¾” birch with a 1/4” layer of cherry on top (a solid inch of cherry would have been way too cost prohibitive). The speaker stands are made from birch with a cherry vaneer on top. I used some ebony aniline dye for the bottom half and the sides of the speaker stands. The top and top of the speaker stands are all natural. I finished the top and the speaker stands with a diluted gloss polyurethane (I added a 50% mixture of mineral spirits so I could wipe it on with a cloth versus a sponge brush – it took much more time and many more coats, but it came out like glass). The bottom half was finished with a semi-gloss polyurethane and a final wipe of the gloss mixture I created.
I added a small shelf in the back to hold all the cables, power supplies, etc.

The boxes below and the speaker stands are all 19.125" wide thus allowing me to rack equipment as I get it.

Once I have everything set up on it, build some bass traps, diffusors, and mid/high freq absorbers, I'll post a pic in the studio pic thread.

For now, I just wanted to share the desk itself....

The desk is looking rather sexy. Very good job, man!

Planning to create a service for customized music production desks? Just a thought, but I wouldn't mind taking advantage of something of that nature.

Looks great. Making it curved like that must have been diffcult, or atleast time consuming.

Yeah, it seems to be countertops. The ones in the links appear to be more for kitchen use.

Wow, pretty smart idea and rather innovative. I might pursue something of this nature once I get my own apartment.

Nice looking desk, DA. Nice lighting in that room, too. Your TI is going to have a very nice home!
