Hi

i currently have only a laptop with onboard sound running fruityloops. I am in the market for some near field sturio monitors though for around 300 a pair.

My room in uni is about 3/4 meters long by 2/3 meters wide and roughly 2/3 meters high. Walls are red brick and i have a fire door whch i find keeps the sound sealed in my room.

I have searched google, tranceaddict here and even been going through a phase of getting headphones instead. I have now narrowed down my choices based on my research to the following:

KRK RP5 Rokit

Event TR8


So here are my questions if anyone can offer their own advice/experience, what would give me the best sound for the price? I really can't decide between the two, and i can only hear an audio demo of the KRK ones where i live here.

I am assuming i would probably need to opt for an external soundcard and maybe even an amp also?

I was thinking about getting active monitors as opposed to passive. Is there any major difference?

I demo'd a pair of KRKs a while back and thought that the sweet spot was a touch small in comparison to the other monitor's i was listening to.

The Events, definately. You might want to consider the TR6 model though.
Yes, you will need a new, preferably external audio interface. I recommend the Echo Audiofire interfaces.

Both monitors are active, meaning they have built in amps.

tr8s vs. rp5s?

tr8s cost like, 3 times as much as rp5s. are you sure you're talking about the right models?

I don't think it really matters which one you get so long as you stick with your decision and get used to monitoring on them to learn where they are deficient.

I have a pair of Dynaudio BM5as and almost never use them. I use a pair of Sennheiser CX-300s most of the time. Admittedly thats largely because I can't get away with making a huge racket in my apartment but in fairness to the CX-300s, I'm so used to monitoring on them it feels weird when they aren't stuck in my ear. Little buggers only cost me 30 quid.

The Events seem to have the best range (35Hz - 20Khz) at 329, but i was looking now also at the Tapco S-5 (64Hz - 20Khz) for 199 as i could also get some sort of external audio card for the money or at least put it towards it.

I was going to go for beyerdynamic DT990 headphones at first, but everyone said you simply can't do proper mixdowns on headphones.

Get the Event TR-6. You need 6" drivers to get accurate bass. Tapco monitors are fine, but I wouldn't recommend them since they're only 5".

I am going to go with the Tapco S8.

Reading reviews and the frequency response they have is better than anything else i have been considering.

I can't comment on the Event monitors but I have found that the KRKs sound a little muddy in the mid to low mid. I found the KRKs to be a little too hi-fi for my liking.

That said I mix on Yamaha MSP5s which I know are not to everyones taste either. Yes, I know they weren't mentioned but in my mind not a bad option.

You might also want to look at Genelecs although I have found that their smaller models tend to under perform slightly.

However you shouldn't really do your final mix downs purely on headphones but they are great for panning. Although you don't get a proper idea of the stereo image so it's not good to rely only on headphones.

i don't want to get down on you, but i really hope you take (took?) the standard monitor advice and listen to them first. we say this for a reason - because reviews and statistics mean fuck all man. any speaker can go down to 50hz, it just might sound shit because they've had to put a huge ass port in the back that turns bass into nothing but a muddy drone.

...not that anyone seems to listen these days.

for the record, the fact that tapco are made by mackie means nothing, don't let marketing sway you. the mackies being sold today are not the same as the mackies being sold 10 years ago - 10 years ago they used Vifas, now they use Superhappyfuntimeyumchas. ^_^

PS. Without seeing an actual frequency graph, it is safe to ignore frequency response entirely. It is an estimate at best and saying a speaker goes down to 40hz does not mean it goes down to 40hz WELL.

I'm not saying Tapco are crap though. I'm just saying you're going about the decision the wrong way. If you want something good, put the effort in.
