Talking My Interview with Airwave aka Lolo

Laurent, I really appreciate you taking the time to have this interview. We admire you as an artist and have many questions for you.

First and foremost can you tell us a little bit about your history in the music industry?

I appreciate, too. Thanks for considering me.

I've been producing records for about 13 years, and started releasing my records under many aliases in 1997. My full discography counts more than 200 releases, with some trance classics. I've also become a live performer, delivering top class performances worldwide. It wouldn't be a lie saying that I've been quite busy with music in the last 12 years.

You are a man with many different aliases such as Airwave, Lolo, Green Martian, North Pole…and the list can go on; do you care to clarify why you use so many different aliases?
How do your styles of production differ from alias to alias?

2 reasons, basically.

1- The Lolo sound for example differs totally from The Green Martian. Lolo is quite peaceful and more melody-based while the Green Martian is extremely hard. Airwave is more of a edgy project that sums everything up. I don't want people to get confused and have them know what they're about to hear every single time. And of course I have like rough templates designed for each project, but not on a screen, simply in my head, so it's doesn't break my creativity.

2- The past collaborations. When you're young, you just tend to try things out with many others. Because we just want to have a specific concept behind everything that we do, we need a specific "band" name. And then comes the matter of the specific sound. Dj Fire is quite different from Fire&Ice, and still both have the same band members, although I want Dj Fire to be specifically dedicated to jurgen, my partner in crime.

I heard an absolutely amazing track that you have created under your alias Planisphere along with co-producer Georges Petkidis by the name of “No Sugar Added”; will this track be released anytime soon?

Eeeeerm, it was released on "Solarism" about a year ago. Amazing how people were not aware of that. :-S

Can you please tell us a bit more about your latest dance breaks, and loops CD entitled Airwave – Triloops Dance Breaks?

Sure, This first volume contains a personal collection of loops that I've done through the years. between 2003 and 2006 exactly. I produced them with a lot of different software, includign Reason, Ableton Live, Reaktor... I was literally using them as you can eat potato chips. So I thought it was a good idea to have them released thanks to Loopmasters, with a pro-package and layout. The samples are compatible with about any piece of software, and I can't thank them enough for their incredible work on that one!

Who is currently designing and running your new website; and can you tell us more about the layout?

I am, in fact. I do everything now. News updates, newsletters, photos, links. Consider it as the main site, with a blog at the start, some community links, and finally some other gadgets just like that production tips that's now publically available. I will do more and more of that in the future.

Do you have any plans to work with some other artists or vocalists in the near future?

At this time, I have no plans, though. I'm just finishing Touareg, Airwave's new album. It has collaborations with vocalists and musicians, but you haven't heard of them, ever!! I have plans to support my own bonzai artists by working with them. I fell in love with artists such as Bjoern Small. They need my attention, as they're outstanding musicians.

What types of equipment do you work with in your studio?

Basically, it's an iMac, Ableton Live, Reason, Melodyne, Logic, a pair of speakers, and a master keyboard.

Do you have any advice to give to upcoming producers and DJ’s?

Yeah. "Never forget where you come from" is a motto that might save your life when you "hit the ground"

What do you like to do in your spare time when you are not spinning or producing?

I just finished reading Half Blooded Prince and The Deatly Hallows, the two last Harry Potter stories. I'm a huge fan of Tom Clancy's, too. I love cooking, baking. I have a wonderful life with my wife, too. And also, I'm a huge gamer of course. I have a ton of video games.

Do you have any other comments that you would like to share with your fans?

Yep. Spread the word out... and catch me if you can!!! :-)))))

\o/ legend!! "Solarism" CD is amazing, not to mention every classic Airwave tune ever put out... I wish this guy would step it up and make some bigger steps.. As a producer, I think he could rise to the top, he's that talented...

Airwave is the probably one of the masters of Trance. Mastering Progressive Trance, melodic & uplifting, he's truly amazing.

I had the pleasure of hearing him play both an Airwave set, as well as a Green Martian live PA set back in '04 at Godskitchen in the UK. He is a better producer than most of the bigger names, not sure why he isn't bigger himself.

I guess he doesn't want to live the life like Armin or Ferry or Tiesto. He knows that he can pick that route and be a huge, but he refused. I guess thats not him.

That is because he didn't stop DJing. He has a monthly radio show and he does perform at events. He has not however been to NY yet.

Airwave's monthly radio show Progrez airs on DI.fm: every last wednesday of the month. Progressive Channel: 2pm EST/19:00GMT/20:00GMT +1

on NRJ, Belgium: every 1st and 3rd friday of the month.
