Why is so much music boring these days?

a rhetorical question, but now more than ever, for me to make a cd of 16 tracks, i'm literally going through hundreds of songs (if half of them can even be called a song) it doesn't even matter what edm genre anymore. Everyone has figured its cool to go for a 'harder' sound, and although i like the harder sound when done properly and with a purpose, so many 'producers' are just shooting out shit with garbage that doesn't resolve to any sort of purpose, no energy from a strong breakdown/buildup, a monotunos line that can literally stretch the whole song, or 1:30 in some cases with literally no harmonic or rhythmic change. (not even a bloody hi-hat to at least make it different!) seriously, i can make a shit hook and loop it for 5mins too.

This is more of a rant then a question. I've always enjoyed the process of obtaining new music on beatport, but wow does most of it suck balls. No wonder i'm not excited to go to as many shows these days when many djs resort to playing this bullshit.

I'd say try looking outside of what's popular in your genre of choice, or, explore other genres.

In my opinion, I do agree that its becoming a little bit more challenging to obtain a good number of choons...A couple of years ago, finding really good music was a breeze...now Ive become a lot more selective since the "bangers" are a little more difficult to find. As for all the choons that are "boring," all I can say to that is TO EACH THEIR OWN. To you it may suck balls, but to others it may be something overwhelming. That's why music is so diverse because people in general are diverse. If everyone liked the same music, THAT would be boring!

i never stated that all music is boring. Looking past EDM music, there is an abundance of amazing music out there. (.ie jazz, film scores/classical, some rock, lounge, ethnic etc) and as i stated in my first sentence, i'm still making edm cds.

i know my comments came off lowbrow, but i'm not suggesting everyone should like the same music either. I'm sure some selections i pass up on, others may enjoy, but in the overall spectrum, the "QUALITY" of music has greatly been demoted. I think this is shown by sales of under 10 for a great number of songs on beatport. They should have never been there in the first place. Quality control in EDM is the biggest issue and its rather frustrating since the genre's are so saturated. The other problem is some gems have less then 10 purchases, just because they have been drowned out in a field of sub-par music. I've always had the stance that i like Good music. regardless of genre. Good - refers to absolutely any genre where the musican took time and care to incorporate originality, production quality, and an overall interest to engage the listener. For many, this criteria could be vast enough for people to enjoy their favourite form of music without everyone liking the same thing.

If you're having trouble finding good tunes, it probably means you have a very very narrow and undeveloped appreciation of music, dominated by a tendency to use it for personality self-reinforcement and subcultural tribal identification, and handicapped by a forced naivette of what's actually out there. And the reason why you don't like it anymore is because you're growing up.

A tip: stop doing that.

There's just as much boring music now as there ever was, it's just that nowadays it's much more easy to find (or hard to avoid, whichever way you want to look at it).

It's just that the barrier of making music is so low today compared to a few years ago, that we are overwhelmed by a flood of crappy tracks going nowhere. Some artists have high standards about their music, and don't consider that because a track exists and it's easy to release, it should be. However, a vast majority of producers is ready to release substandard stuff for whatever reason (money, being know to get gigs, etc). See the deluge of so called mnml release totally uninteresting, boring with no groove at all. Joe random played with whatever software and found bells and click, wow that's cool let's release it!

There's a lot of good stuff that doesn't sound generic to be found either produced today or in the past, but for the today stuff one must dig harder.
