Catholic church announces 7 new deadly sins

Not content with telling people they're fucked unless they believe what they say, they've narrowed the field even more

New 7 deadly sins
Updated: 09:23, Tuesday March 11, 2008

The Vatican has brought the seven deadly sins into the 21st century by issuing a new list of mortal offences.

According to the catholic church, the modern day cardinal sins are drug abuse, abortion, environmental pollution, excessive wealth, the creation of poverty and genetic manipulation.

The list, published in L'Osservatore Romano, the Vatican newspaper, comes at the end of a week long Vatican conference on confession.

The Pope deplored the 'decreasing sense of sin' in today's 'securalised world' and the falling numbers of Roman Catholics going to confession.

The original seven deadly sins, laid down in the 6th century by Pope Gregory the Great and popularised in the Middle Ages by Dante in The Inferno, are lust, gluttony, avarice, sloth, anger, envy and pride.

the list
drug abuse
abortion
environmental pollution
excessive wealth
the creation of poverty
genetic manipulation
pedophilia

so basically the Catholic church is screwing itself over on at least 2:
excessive wealth
pedophilia

Looks like I'm going straight to hell right with the first one. Might as well start killing people and raping women right now since I'm going to hell for drug abuse right?

You would have thought that the massively decreasing numbers of practicing Catholics would have given the Church a clue that they need to reform and update their message. Sadly, I guess they haven't learned yet.

When you really look at the history of organized religion and see that from the start it was basically used by political leaders to control people it makes you seriously question if all that stuff isn't most likely made of bullshit anyway.

wait, is this the CATHOLIC church we are talking about? as in the largest land holding organization in the world catholic church? good to see they are following all their own rules.

They were even having a hard time following the old set of rules, did you know that the Vatican used to host orgies till the French came along and they all started to get VD?

TROOF...at least that is what the history department head at school said back in the day.

I will hold off on judgment until I see the actual wording of the decree on this, I hardly think one word summaries of each "deadly sin" can be an accurate reflection of what the church's position really is. Hopefully the actual document will be available soon.

Read about it yesterday, and I'm still puzzled:

  1. Why exactly have they added "abortion" to the list if, as I recall it, they see it as a kind of murder? Shouldn't the 10 Commandments take care of that?
  2. Also, aren't "excessive wealth" and "the creation of poverty" already related to "avarice"?
  3. How is modern "drug abuse" any different from the consumption of tobacco and alcohol, which have also been around for quite a while? Wouldn't that put wine in a quite difficult situation?
  4. Does it mean the genetic manipulation of vegetables is a sin now? Is the consumption of transgenics also sinful?
  5. Finally, did the church release a clear-cut definition of what paedophillia is(n't)? I even visited their official website, looked around, and found nothing. I mean, my great grandfather married my great grandmother when she was 14... is that paedophilia under catholic judgement? If not, does that mean I can hit it after puberty does? I find that particularly intriguing.

But, all in all, I think this is a good thing: thanks to these polemic changes, it becomes clearer that religion is a human (rather than divine) enterprise, and the church can thus receive more fair criticism.

Your questions are all very good... that's why one should wait for the actual verbiage before making any judgements.

I admit I did find it curious that they could just make up 7 new deadly sins.

Yeah, it surprised me too Anyway, in case you want to know more about how this kind of thing works, there was a recent discussion about whether or not the purgatory existed. Unfortunately (and quite surprisingly), it's not been added to Wikipedia's entry on the History of Purgatory yet... but I guess you can easily find it if you look it up

The story that newspapers have latched on to comes from an interview Archbishop Gianfranco Girotti (head of the Apostolic Penitentiary) gave to L'Osservatore Romano (the official newspaper of the Vatican Holy See). He didn't give real details in the interview... as everything the Vatican does, you can expect their position will be very elaborate and complex, unfortunately, nuanced positions don't work for sound bites so the media will boil it down to "stem-cell research and polluting are deadly sins."
