When he opens up the vst he says its an ESP Synthesizer, but what synth is it exactly?
I have a ton of synths that do noise. I've ran them through everything and never got noise like that before.

He's obviously using no attack. But when he punches the notes in, how does he get that little groove to the hats/noise? I don't quantanize at all so I have no idea what 16c means.

I just love how he punches it in so quick and gets such a sticky hard hat sound, with virtually no effort.

Also, for anyone who knows Tiestos remix of Adagio For Strings. He has a hat sound very similar.
And I've had an obsession with those hats ever since I heard the song. But I was never able to figure out whether it was sampled hats or noise like Angelo did in this vid.

This is driving me crazy.

And that bass on the jupiter is sick! I never got a bass sound like that on pro-53 or z3ta, am I missing something lol?

its just a built in logic plug. all digital drums are done this way its just how whitenoise is processed for the best (besides buying an analog drum machine) you should go buy some 909 drum kits, plenty of those kind of sounds for ya

Anthony is right, this is one of the built in synths for Logic. It is surprisingly useful considering how simple it is. Its so simple that it doesn't even employ a traditional ADSR envelope. I use it all the time for things like noise sweeps.

A lot of the sound of just setting the Decay really short on the ESP. The built in chorus on ESP is really cheesy sounding as far as choruses go, but it seems to work really well when using it with the noise OSC.

The little groove is because he recorded his MIDI notes with variable velocity and ESP has a velocity control on the filter about halfway up on the default preset, so that the filter cutoff is modulated by the velocity of the note. If you notice, he just taps in a few 16th notes when he records the MIDI for the hats and he never fixes the velocity, so the groove is just the variation. This is also a good technique for adding interest to static parts of any type, provided your sound module has a parameter or two set to respond to velocity changes.

This is also just a built in groove template in Logic. Quantizing to groove templates can add rhythmic interest to parts in your track. Ask any hip-hop producer why the AKAI MPC groove templates are so popular with that crowd. You can download groove templates and import them into your sequencer of choice.

Personally, if I am going to use a groove template (which is rare), I don't like settling on one until I have the track a bit more fleshed out. Every producer works differently.

ESP is a great synth for applications such as this.

This is just a function of how good the Auturia emulation of the Jupiter 8 sounds. They did a top notch job on this synth emulation, IMO. There is a reason a lot of producers like to use the J8, both the hardware and software versions, it sounds fantastic.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind owning one myself, but lately I have been so software centric, I've been pretty happy with the Auturia emulation.

i see the software come up in my ebay saved searches all the time... and $150 isn't that much to spend but i get nervous about buying software on ebay : /

you're pretty happy with it? the ONLY emulation i use a ton of (only because i haven't won one of these on Ebay yet either) is the GForce Oddity. i freakin swear by that synth

Yes, I totally agree with you. I basically won't buy any software on eBay, because you never know what you are getting. Most software packages aren't really all that expensive anyway, so I'd rather just pony up for purchasing it new. Frankly, $249 is not all that much to pay for a software synth IMO.

Yes. I don't really have a real J8 to compare it to, so I can't really speak as to the full accuracy of the emulation. Most of the people I have met who do own a real J8 say its pretty darn close to the real thing.

The only drawback is the same drawback with most emulations, the low end it a bit thin comparatively, but it is not really noticeable and the software version isn't as "warm", but, again, not really too noticeable. If I need massive low end I can always layer a bit of low-end support from another synth. My Virus B is particularly good a providing low end support in situations like this. A good, low-register triangle or sine wave will usually do the trick.

All I know is that it sounds really, really good and I use it a fair amount. Worth the purchase IMO.

I usually use the native 3osc from fruity for basic noise sweeps. I'll link a knob from the phaser and cut off in the 3osc to an xy control on high resonance and it makes great sweeps.

But its not good at all for hats.
Was hoping it was a nonnative synth but oh well. But if its a dl file there may be ways around that lol.

I know its not always the best to request comparisons of different synths as most have their strengths and weaknesses.
But does anyone know if the oscillators in Jupiter 8 are superior to something like z3ta, pro-53, alino etc? I like z3ta for leads and pads but never really liked it for bass.
I use pro-53 for bass and odd sounds like acids etc.
Albino I love for arps and is decent for pretty much everything else.

But I've never had a synth that I really considered hot for bass. Was thinking trilogy but after hearing jupiter I'm starting to rethink that idea.

Just can't get over how much that synth sounds like hardware and the esp for noise.
