I found luck with the gum. (almost 5 smokeless months!) It really helped me because it tied a physical act to the nicotine experience, much like smoking cigs. (if you're like me, and find comfort in the very act of smoking.)
Don't worry about cheating either. I started with a gum and cigarette combo (gum during the morning through the end of the workday, and then a cigarette or 5 when I got home in the evening.) Eventually I took them as one in the same, and slowly began phasing the cigarettes out compeltely. After that, I stayed on the gum for a few months (cause that shits addictive too!) until I was finally tired of paying $20 a week on gum.
Overall, props to you. I was a smoker for 12+ years, and quitting has made me feel totally different in a very good way.
[the biggest thing to stress is not to get down on yourself for cheating/slipping... it WILL happen.]
*EDIT* [in case it wasn't clear, gum=nicotine gum.]
