Second DJ set.....!

So, I started to DJ a little while back, i was reccomended to buy an M-Audio Xponent as my first set because it was wallet friendly and contained everything i needed to learn. Well here comes the time to upgrade. I feel the Xponent is much too easy to use and i think im being a little confined by its technical limitations.

At the moment, I'm using the Xponent on Torq attatched to my PowerBook G4...Behringer headphones...

im thinking of upgrading everything to an uppermiddle CDJ set (2 turntables + mixer) as well as headphones.

I was thinking of something along the lines of pioneer or denon but im not sure which models.

Anyone have any suggestions on the decks and mixer?

im looking to spend a maximum of around $1800USD...

thanks guys!

$1800 is close to what I spent on a pair of used CDJ800MK1's and a Xone:32. Definitely give Craigslist a chance. Since you're also from Vancouver pay a visit to the buy and sell section of fnk.ca.

All these guys are making very good suggestions. With that said, I'm curious about what technical limitations you are running into. Torq with the xponent, as long as it's working properly, gives you more control and flexibility than you could ever get with 1800 dollars worth of real gear. Seriously, you've got 2 decks with excellent looping capability, a good FX processor, fully functional sampler, and a mixer. Really, thats all you could ever need.

I can understand wanting to use more expensive equipment because it feels better, but if you're expecting to be able to actually do more with the music than you already can you're going to be disappointed.

+1

To OP: Are you using auto beatmatching, bc that'll make anything easier.

well when i say technical limitations, im mainly referring to the facet that xponent and torq is quite easy to use. In a way it feels like im cheating even when i dont use the sync option. I'm able to visually see where the track is on the computer screen. I understand that many DJs hook their setup to torq and use it the same way but Id like to try it without.
Also, have to load songs from my mac is a pain in the ass. My mac was bought for the purpose of studio recording and having to load all my songs from my desktop onto my mac every once in a while is a pain in the ass. haha

thanks though, I know that the xponent is a great piece of equipment but Id like to move on from that

First off, you're complaining about transferring songs from one computer to the other? Getting CDJ's will be even more work because you're forced to constantly burn new CD's whenever you get new tracks.

Fundamentally, there's no such thing as "cheating" unless you're just putting on a prerecorded mix and pretending to be doing stuff. However, if you don't want to see waveforms while you practice than you can tape a notecard or something over the waveform display so you can't see it, or just put the laptop in a place where you can't see the screen except when selecting the next track. I do that sometimes when I want to practice just using my ears. No need to spend a bunch of money just to make your life more difficult when you can do it for free.

Get some new speakers instead!

There's an even easier solution. Click the database button and it will hide all the waveforms and fill the screen with the database.
