Disagree...it's not like 2001, but it's way better than it was 1.5-2 yrs ago, imo. It's shifted to where smaller clubs are more fun than the big ones, but it's alive and kicking.
My choices:
-Love is my top choice overall, Sat nights tend to be best for house/trance/techno, with fri nights showcasing dubstep/breaks/non-mainstream style. Check www.musicislove.net for the lineups as they vary widely.
-Sullivan Room is a great intimate venue as well on a weekend, usually house or techno. www.sullivanroom.com
-Deep Space Mondays @ Cielo are reaching legendary status w/ Francois K. Fancy, but still fun. www.cieloclub.com
-Pacha is OK if you can deal with the crowd. Talent there is absolutely top notch. www.pachanyc.com
-Webster Hall is coming back strong, like it or not, haha. Ongoing remodeling, improved sound, and lots of top talent over the next few months. www.websterhall.com
