Thats a cool idea... did you secure it to your table at all? I'd be paranoid somebody would smack into it sending my beloved apple lappy tumbling down, resulting in a moment of utter heartbreak and furious anger.
I have a macbook pro I run Torq on and would liek to create my own laptop stand, as I do NOT see any reason to spend 80 bucks buying one off of Stanton or the other providers of said piece of kit. I'd ultimately liek to built a stand for my Torq Connective & my Trigegr Finger midi controllers as well, my set up right now is pretty cluttered.
I'm thinking like and angled upper platform liek yours to store the lappy, and some shelves or something... so I can put my Torq Connective in there and my firewire sound card and hard drive in too, much like you're trying to do. Looks pretty simple, can't wait to build my own!!

It's secured from the inside. Screws are just the right size so they don't stick out. Making it look like it's just 'glued' on.
I've given it a good test by pulling the laptop stand around a bit and it's attached to the table i made which weights in at about 75kilos so it's not going anywhere I made this stand because of that very reason though. Having my laptop just sitting behind my decks wasn't good enough.
If anyone knocks the laptop off the stand they're fingers shall be broken. It's written on the wall (kidding).
Definitely go for it mate, building it yourself is much more fun as you appreciate what you've put into it and can adapt whatever you're making to what you've already got. In my case i wanted it to look part of the table plus i could probably build another one for the other side if i were ever to get a cdj or Effects unit. Build a shelf between the two and hey presto.. having said that the thing would become completely immobile.
One idea i had was to build a cicular table that i'd attach on the ouside half way down the laptop stand to keep a few hdd's on or whatever else i needed a shelf for. But i've decided against it as i don't want people who usually stand around the area where the laptop is, knocking whatever i might have on that shelf down.
Either way, i'm very happy with it, and it's just the right distance away from me, i was afraid it would be too far away. |
Good thing you screwed it in good, or that would be a tear filled disaster.
Oh yeah, I'm sold now! I never thought about it, but, if I build my booth, its MINE, its how I like! I feel like a retard for coming to this epiphany as it is common sense LOL!! But yeah, as soon as I'm back in my home thats project number one!
Right now its 3 stanton str8 100 TT's, a pioneer djm600, 2x CDJ 800's, my macbook pro, g5 tower (w/ 23" cinema display), Torg X-Ponent controller, trigger finger controller, and torq connective. Up till now I've been using the dining room table LOL... I need to seriously reorganise. Just ordered the Korg KM4 mixer can't wait to play with that when I get home!! Its gonna be probably 2 months but expect pics lol.

Here's mine, just some plywood, steel pipe fittings, and guywires made from stainless steel aircraft cables & turnbuckles. The post is a standard 1/2" x 3' threaded pipe. Height ends up just below elbow level which is good (no more bending over the equipment all night). Only takes 20x20" floor space. There is a 3" computer fan under the laptop for extra cooling. This one breaks down into 3 pieces that are easy to carry, I was going to make a one piece plywood table but at the time couldn't figure out a design that was small and lightweight.

The pipe fittings are available in 1/2", 3/4", and 1" sizes, called "floor flange" & "nipple" and look like this:

Takes a few minutes to set up because of the guywires, maybe bungee cords could be used instead to simplify it. It would be hard to actually tip over the table as it is more stable than you would expect, but you need to keep the party people at a safe distance.
I've used the same top piece in a DJ booth that had no extra floor space, on a 6" pipe screwed into a mini-base that is C-clamped to the regular club DJ table. You could use the pipe fittings idea to make permanent stands for a CDJ or laptop to be mounted a foot or so above other equipment on a wood DJ table (no guywires needed for such a small height).
I might make another version using a speaker tripod stand for the base, for faster setup.
