Favorite Painter/Painting?

I've been doing a bit of cultural anthropology on museums this semester and that in concert with my trip to back to the Van Gogh museum has had me thinking a lot about pieces of art I really enjoy.

I'm a very, very naive individual insofar as art goes. I don't know much, and could best be classified as a "noob."

That being said, my favorite painter is Picasso, and these are my three favorites from him:

3 Musicians

Guernica (The history of this one in particular is very interesting to me - but that's for another time)

And his reimagining of Las Meninas

You guys?

I have a few, but the one that springs to mind is Dali's 'The Hallucinogenic Torreadore"

I like Munch's Scream:

I used to have a "mini-gallery" in my Orkut profile with many other paintings but this is by far my favourite... I really like expressionism, even in its most abstract forms:

(That's Franz Marc's Rehe im Walde)

ps.: Both paintings are featured in Wikipedia's entry on Expressionism

this is way too hard i'd have to think about it a lot

for some reason i never think about these 'favorite things ever'. people ask me what my favorite book is - no fucking clue, movie, etc.

music would be even more difficult

the worst is when someone asks me who my favorite architect is, since that's what I do. they just don't get it when I shrug my shoulders. i guess i've been exposed to a lot of architecture so on one hand i have too much to choose from, and on the other hand i am really critical

with painting, i have a lot of art history and gallery visits, etc behind me but i still feel like i have not seen nearly enough to choose

"I think the scientific and the artistic spirit have something in common. The scientist wants not only to learn the facts, but to understand how they cohere, fit together and make a whole. He even uses criteria such as beauty and symmetry to help decide which theory he wants.

The scientist cannot capture the whole cosmos in thought. In his mind he makes a kind of microcosm, which we see as an analogue of the cosmos. In this way we try to get a feeling for the whole. The artist, I suppose, gets a feeling for the whole some other way.”
