I grew up having one of my fathers best friend's older son as a bit of a kid I looked up to. I used to go out to a roller rink owned by my father's friend, and about 2 times or so a year they would have these events where Jay spun all these awesome late 70's through early 90's electro, hip hop, and dance records. Stuff along the lines of Afrika Bambaata, Newcleuz, Dr. Dre and the World Class Wrecking Cru, Egyptian Lover, Debbie Deb, Freeestyle, Lisa Lisa, and the L.A. Dream Team.

This were big, nasty, brooding records and I loved seeing kids break dance to them. I would wind up going to the rink all the time just to hear that handful of good Electro they'd play in between all the pop music on a loud system. This was all probably between the ages of 8 and 11.

In the early 90's and at the age where I was just heading into puberty it was very awkward for me to begin my fascination with club music. I started to listen to stuff from CeCe Peniston, Robin S. "Show me Love" was one of my favorite tunes of all time - but it was a secret passion because very if any of my friends shared my enjoyment of it.

The final phase began for me in 1997, "Homework" was released and I was sold - "Da Funk" was just such a mega tune for me, to this day it's still the ring tone on my phone. I started saving my pennies immediately after I found myself listening to "Homework", "The Saint Soundtrack", and old big beat and electro records. At this point I don't think I'd ever even heard a house or trance "set" - but by the time I finally got a setup I had been smitten by the '99 era sound of the EM world tour, and for the next three years proceeded to play a combination of really bad and really good prog/trance.

Phew - that was a bit of a narrative there. Sorry for the long post - had been a while since I thought of a lot of that.

Early 80s Electro Funk. A lot of the groups mentioned by RJT and about a million more.

Influenced by a lot of earlier DJs like Red Alert, Jazzy Jay, Kool DJ Herc, Francis Grasso, Grandmaster Flash, Funkmaster Wizard Whizz, Grandmaster D-ST, DJ Cheese, Chad Jackson, CJ Mackintosh etc, Tack Head, Davy DMX, Both Dr. Dres (World Class Wreckin Cru and Original Concept) and so on.

Found myself as a DJ long before it became a status symbol in the UK.

I suppose the major reason was a love of music, especially electronic music.

What we have today is so far removed from the origins of how I started. Long before I had decks I was trying to edit mixes by using double tape decks and using the pause button to great effect. Got my first mixer in 1985 the rest is history.

My sister always listened to these mixed tapes from DJs she knew. It was Freestyle, like Collage, Shannon, Stevie B. I just thought it was kinda cool so wanted to try it.

Every where I went before I started DJing I had my big mdr-v700's on my head. I DJ now, and I still wear the headphones where ever I go

my big cousin was an influence on me, i've always collected vinyl records. even before i had a turntable to play them on i had about 300-400 records.

i spent so much money on records that i couldnt save for turntables haha.
