Ortofons vs Stantons

I own the Stanton 500 ALIIs and am very happy with them, but I realise that TA DJs in general have an extreme soft spot for Ortofon carts. What exactly is it about the Ortofons that make you guys want to fork out that much more for them? Do they last much longer than Stantons?

They just sound better and track better ...
I find that the Stantons (500ALII especially) have an extremely overemphasized high-frequency range and sound to hissy.

If you don't want to spend too much money on Ortofons, you don't have to. Ortofon OM Pro Black can be had for as little as $40 at www.djmart.com ... I would highly recommend this cart - especially since you can put a better stylus on it (ie. from the Nightclubs) and make them behave like actual nightclubs, for a fraction of the original price.

Stylii is the plural for stylus.

The stanton diskmasters, trackmasters, and groovemasters all stand up well to ortofon's. I have no idea why people dont like them as much

That's actually the first bit of praise I've heard for these carts. I've not used them myself, buteveryone seems to hate them so I've steered clear of them.

I've tested a lot of carts, and frankly, Ortofons are those I like most, it's difficult to explain, they have something to their sound that is appealing to me, something other styli don't have. Plus they are built like tanks.

I'm not so fond of Stantons for the same reason, and I've found them to be a little less skip resistant. The only one from Stanton that comes even close to Ortofons is the 680 HP.

I guess it's one of those personal preference matters again...

I would have to say in this instance personal preference comes at a very high cost, the difference in price between these 2 are huge!

I have the Ortofon OM Pro S, and I'm quite satisfied with it.

What i've heard from the man who sold it to me (well, sold; I practically got it for free ), is that the Ortofons make the record wear out more, but that they are more skip-resistant than the Stanton's.

So I think it's just a matter of your personal preferences whether to buy Santon's or Ortofons.

Hope this made sense.

hmm.. i have heard the opposite, that stantons wear out your records more, and ortofons skip easier..

i think of stanton as being for scratch DJs, and thus, needles that hold good, and wear out records.

i think of ortofon as high class audio sutff that might fall out of the groove if you cue it to hard.

the stantons sure are cheaper though.

and i can't seem to find anywhere to buy a matched set of ortofons anyway.

I think i might just go with stanton.

hell no man, ortofons basically don't skip at all. I have my Blue DJs at 1.5 grams, and the only time they would skip is if i would backspin, or CUE a really warped record. Before ortofons i had trackmasters, and they totally SUCK if you compare them to ortofons. They skip like sh*t at the same weight, and the sound quality isn't as good(you really can hear the difference!)
