So wait, what does it do that the 3d doesn't? |
it really doesn't sound like much:
Following the revolutionary Xone:3D, the new Xone:4D DJ mixer with built in MIDI controller now has a 24bit sound card and a great new look and UV light sensitive white screening so the controller data will glow under UV light.
Here's the latest info on it:
# Totally new USB2 soundcard
# 24bit/96kHz capability
# Drivers available for both PC and Mac
# 4 stereo outputs plus digital out
# 4 stereo inputs plus digital in
# 8 extra soundcard configuration switches remove the need for the desktop configuration utility of the :3D
# Ability to switch FX2 RCA sockets to be recording outputs
# Unique real-time LFO waveform edit function
# Dual layer control surface with control snapshot allows 225 mappable MIDI controls across the two layers.
# Updated mixer circuitry
# Improved BPM detection system
# Heavy duty chassis and front panel
The new 4D will do everything that the 3D could do, and more. It will enable DJs to greatly extend the capability of their digital setup, e.g. by running 4 simultaneous decks in Native Instruments Traktor, or by being able to achieve genuine multi-track recording of their sets in applications such as Ableton Live or ProTools. The new 4D should soon be given Traktor Scratch approval by Native Instruments, enabling full compatibility with their encoded vinyl system.
Of course, the most noticeable visible element about the 4D is the new style. A & H have developed it in response to many people’s requests for panels which are easier to read in low light (all the white screening is in Ultra Violet sensitive paint, which glows when exposed to UV light), and for the Xone design to become more stylish and representative of contemporary design.

wasn't 3:d limited to a total of 4 in/outputs, where as now you have 4 of each. and usb2 vs 1.1
3d supposedly had plenty of reliablility issues, so maybe that's the big update here.

It's a nice update, but too late... I had the 3D and the sound card was a HUGE limitation. The MIDI controls aren't really good enough to mix with (not enough knobs for 3 band eq), and when you have that "almost-xone-92" mixer sitting right there it makes more sense to route ableton channels into that. The 3D limited you to two channels, and when you set one of them up as a cue channel, it was really limited. Plus the 3D has huge MIDI latency.
But yes, for ableton DJ's, the Vestax VCM-600 plus an external soundcard seems like a better choice to me at this point.
This device isn't bad, but it tried to be all things for everyone, but winds up being best at none of them.
