I'm hoping some of you will have a listen to this sample and tell me how this bassline is achieved. It's taken from George Acosta - Falling Backwards (Vast Vision Remix).

In the clip, the bassline repeats for 6 bars, then in the 7th bar it is ever so slightly different.

This is what it sounds like to me:

K---K---K---K---K---K---K---K
B--B--B----bB---B--B--B----bB

Where B is one octave lower than b.


It kinda sounds like there is some glide/portamento between the b&B, but I can't figure out how to make it sound like the sample. I keep thinking I can hear a third note in between these two. If b and B are F, sounds like there's an E in between them? Then in the 7th bar, this middle bit is missing, and makes the transition sound much more accented/stacato.

I haven't been able to make anything remotely close, which is why I'm posting. The bassline I've made is just the one I've drawn out above, and it is missing the slide featured in the sample posted

Anyone want to have a stab at this?

I popped on cubase, loaded random bassline, put in the notes in the pattern, and a kick, didnt do anything else. Sounds basically like it to me, minus the bassline processing and some envelope fine-tuning. Sounds like there might be a little reverb on that bass? But I hear no sliding, no portamento, no additional notes in that sample. Listened on some normal stereo speakers and high quality headphones.
I think you're hearing things! What are you listening on? Try headphones.

In the sample I posted, can you hear the difference between the bassline in bar 7 and the first few bars? Can you explain what is different between these two sections? When I make this bassline using the pattern described above, it sounds very close to the bar 7 bass, but the subtly different earlier bass is what I'm trying to achieve.

Any ideas?

Ok,

This is what I gather.

From the sample daveth posted. You're adding an extra note as to what is actually in the mix.

When the bB hits, the b note is still held when the B note starts, if that makes sense. So there's a little bit of overlap which makes it sound like portamento or whatever but its really just 2 notes playing at once.

The alternation on the last bit in the original sample is just a 1/8th or 1/4th note note break between b and B.

so instead of bB it's like b-B.

I could be wrong or whatever or I may be oversimplifying it but that's what it sounds like to me.

That was my theory at first, but you can usually tell when two basslines get chorded, even for a brief moment, because it usually sounds like shit. That's kinda why I suspected it was maybe reverb. But maybe there actually is overlap, since they're octaves it probably wont sound so bad... Hard to tell.

But anyways, Daveth, yeah, the problem is your note timing. Acosta's bassline is more syncopated than what you're doing.
This should help illustrate best. I forgot to extend the second note of each measure, and I accidentally shortened it by a measure, but you can correct those.

i could just post a screenshot of the pattern ofcourse

but the pattern isnt hard, the synth itself has some LFO additions to it which makes it sound a little different when played in longer notes.

Still not really sure where to go from here, my intentions weren't to reproduce the bass *exactly*, but was just curious as to what was happening to make it sound like this, whether it's the pattern or more related to the synth/patch itself.
