Plexiglass Table

So I'm thinking of creating my own custom Table as I'm moving into a new apartment and will be needing a table for my gear.
I'm thinking of making the surfaces out of plexiglass, It will have 3 stands (2 for CDJs and 1 for Laptop). I will probably use abandoned factory steel pipes as the legs of the table. Main reason for plexiglass is I want to drill LEDs into it.

My question goes to the handymen out there:
What thickness do you suggest? Any general suggestions?
Do you think this is going to run me so much that I'd be better off buying a regular staples table?

well plexyglass is pretty strong so i don't think u need to go super thick, but that depends on what exactly u want to put on it i guess.
cd's aren't too heavy so that would be alright.

give me more info like a little draw out or anything and i'll be more than happy to help you out as much as i can.

it all depends on how you support it.

don't go less than 1/4". even then that will require a lot of structure. if you take 2 pieces of plexi the length of the table and about 3" wide each and fix them perpendicular to the surface, underneath, cross-braced then you'll have a pretty sturdy structure. you'll want to fix the legs directly to this structure which will require careful drilling through the plexi (it shatters). you want to spread the load out as much as you can on the surface and you don't want to create bending moments by fixing it to the vertical supports.

it is going to be expensive, especially if you go for 1/2" plexi

why not salvage the surface as well as the legs.

Our local plastic supply always got the hook-ups on scrap. I recently picked up 2 10"x10"x1" thick plexi for $10 a piece. 1" looks badass when polished and lit up. 1/2" would look pretty good and be strong enough if you have a limited budget.

You gotta hunt for plastic/metal/electronics/scrap supply stores. With my sources, I could build your entire table, with all fasteners, 1" plexi, and all the lighting, for about $100. You just gotta know where to look.

If your determined, with all the proper tools, then yes it is feasible. Its the tool part that gets novices. If you dont have access (through all your family and friends) then it might be wise to buy a table. If you cant build it right, dont build it at all.

Maybe you should try Lexan, a balistic transparent... its more expensive than plexiglass buts its very strong (It'll stop a 7.62x51 so I doubt CDJs would even phase it) and doesn't splinter or shatter whne you drill into it.
