festivals & drugs

I havn't been going out for that long, but it seems like lately, even in the last few months, the more aggresive, and more "serious" drugs at festivals has really been increasing, making the ability to enjoy the music harder for the rest of us-- case in point: kryal, which has now been cancelled because of the drug-rep it got...
Apparently summadayze was over-run by fucked people as well (i heard there were heaps of syringes in the cubicles.... :eyes

thoughts?

That's me in the corner, That's me in the spotlight, I'm Losing my religion, Trying to keep up with you ,And I don't know if I can do it, Oh no, I've said too much,I haven't said enough, I thought that I heard you laughing, I thought that I heard you sing, I think I thought I saw you try.

But that was just a dream, That was just a dream, But that was just a dream, Try, cry, why try? That was just a dream ,Just a dream, just a dream, Dream

my first partay was belfast 1999. whilst the use of e and speed has def. become more prevalent, ive noticed an insane increase in the use of K, G and ice. I think cos ALOT more ppl are doin it these days, people feel safer pushing limits and getting more hammered. and man have i seen some busted up units in recent times.

Its a tricky one to answer. Like Walter I have been partying since 99/2000 ish. Somethings I have noticed over the last 7-8 years in terms based on my experiences with friends, etc.
- E and Speed and coke were the drugs of choice back then. And occassionally K but typically this was not by choice for most (eg. Speed/K pills). Then the testers and pillreports were more readily available which help remove some of these for the people that wanted to know what they were getting (to some degree of course)
- Ice and G came on the scene (or became steadily bigger in the scene) and have become more prelevant now and are generally more dangerous, especially G due to the nature of usage. Hence the more serious OD's.
- I have been to Summadayze in the years of 2001-2005 and 2007. The crowds have increased dramatically and the quantity serious OD's has increased probably due to ratio of numbers and higher usage of G/ICE. I saw people being carried out in 2001, and I saw them in 2007. No different. They probably more related to dehydration or mixtures earlier on as apposed to G/ICE which is probably more common in 2007/the last few years. Who knows? How many alcohol related offenses were there on new years? I think there was 520 related arrests in the city for alcohol related offences and violence, was anything mentioned about the amount of people taking to hospital for stomach pumps and OD's on alcohol? I doubt it.
- There was a very interesting 1hr report on the morning Sunday show a couple of months back about the alcohol problem in Australia. Included extensive discussions/interviews with police commissioner, minister for alcohol, minister for illicit drugs, etc (not sure of titles) . It was highlighting how the drug and alcohol department (or whatever the name) acknowledges that alocohol causes something like 100 times (sorry I cant recall figure, but it was massive) the voilence, deaths, abuse, family/financial, health, addiction, etc problems than ALL illicient drugs combined based on comparative ratio (not weight of numbers). They have said they are spending heaps of money on ICE/G campaigns, etc but the alcohol problem is SO much bigger they cant do anything about it because of the culture and MONEY/TAXES generated. I'll try and locate this report, it was very interesting.
- As you've stated above. There is probably an equally amount of drugs at any club/plub than festivals. No one speaks of this on TV. Yet most know it.
- I *tend* to believe that the quality of MDMA in Melbourne in the last few years is not what it used to be. This could be just limited to within my circle of friends/tolerances, etc, I dont know, but this could tempt people into other stronger more dangerous alternatives/mixtures.
- I dont want to be sounding like an advocater (word? spelling?) for drugs by any means. But I think its important not to always believe what you are seeing on TV/media (even the article I saw?) as there are a lot of government influences behind the scenes that you are not seeing. The facts/actuals will probably be impossible to come by.

Hello again,

I have managed to track down the video of the story I watched in September this year. Some of the info/numbers etc I provided above was not accurate so I apologise for this, I might have been mixing this up with a different story I read. See link, there are 2 links to videos on this page, watch 1 then 2.

http://sunday.ninemsn.com.au/sunday...le_2308.asp?s=1

Very interesting...

Chronik you talk some snese here mate, but lets not take it down the path of Alcohol is more dangerous...Drugs are drugs, and imo are illegal for a reason (addiction, after effects etc)

Definately agree, dont mean to sound like I am going down the path of 'alcohol itself is more dangerous and should be banned and drugs should be legal'. Not at all. As you've said, these things are illegal for a reason.

I guess I was trying to make a point on the medias representation of dance parties in general is coming across as very negative do to associated drug use. It is not doing the scene much good here (or anywhere for that matter). It is basically ruining it for everyone who doesnt make a mess of themselves.

i disagree. they're illegal because of political perception, rather than an honest "how harmful are drugs" research effort by those in power. honestly, why in the hell is marijuana illegal? obviously the social/personal/family costs of smoking pot is far less than for alcohol.

a "drug user" is defined as those people i don't know using drugs that i don't like, and this is one way that laws have become established.
