Is he a bodybuilder? He's probably trying to get you to do something called "bulking," where you eat a bunch of food to keep your body in an anabolic (muscle-building) state. You don't have to eat unhealthy crap like candy to do that, though.
The other phase is called "cutting," where you eat less food and start to lose body fat. Basically, you gain the muscle in the "bulking phase" then cut away the fat in the "cutting phase."
I don't personally do this because I'm not a bodybuilder. I just lift weights for strength-maintenance and general fitness rather than "size" specifically...
