at this point i'd say MJ still has the edge, but out of the whole league i'd say only Kobe and Lebron have a chance at overtaking him.

MJ is MJ and Kobe is Kobe, similiar players in different eras, this debate cant really be won. But if we must...
Athletically i think kobe may have the edge. He has a better jump shot adn is a better pure shooter, although his FG % is lower then MJ's, he takes more 3 pointers and simply has a better outside shot.
I think they are equal when taking the ball to the hold. However we must take into consideration that the NBA now allows zone defense, back in MJ's era he didnt face that, and had alot more one on ones. But there was alot more hand checkin allowed in the league during the MJ era.
although Kobe is great, MJ is a better defender, period the end.
And i think mentally, MJ cant be topped. Although Kobe mentally is prob the toughest in the league, i think his attitude problems (which may be a product of LA media/writers to a certain point)have hindered his appeal as a teammate.
All this said, kobe has a way to go in the league, and it appears the Lakers are positioned for another multi year run, so i believe the door is open for him to win over alot of the critics as the "best ever" It appears alot of analyst are ready to do this already after the game last night.
In the end of it, no matter the stats or the rings Kobe obtains, i dont think MJ's value to the league can ever be topped. He took the business side of the NBA to a whole new level, of which i dont think another player could ever top.
