Ok. First of all a disclaimer.

Im not going on the rag against full liveset downloads. I download lots of them. Im not a bastard in disguise trying to trick you.

I need to know the precise legalities of downloading livesets and radio rips from the Internet. Y'see, since I have a shitty 56k modem at home, I have to download the livesets onto CdRW from the Universities fat broadband pipe.

I use d2k usually, cant use Audiogalaxy (They blocked it ). I need to know how legal these livesets are so that if I get questioned about downloading vast quantities of liveset Mp3's, I can say to them "These are non copyright DJ Livesets, and so are legal".

Im not looking to cause a flamewar here. Just tell me. Is it legal or not?????

downloading them is quite legal i would think...selling them, however, would be quite a different thing

Downloading live sets is not illegal. Comparable to, say, Phish and Dave Matthews tape trading rings and such.

I fear the University that would be so strict as to question the legality of your downloads ... I think I download about 500 meg - 1 gig a day of mp3 files on my university computers with never a worry.

Downloading mixsets is equivalent to getting a demo from the DJ. No profit is being had, therefore no copyright issues. It is illegal to sell demo CDs without permission from the artists, so I guess it would be the same with live mixsets.

I've gotten over 45 hours of livesets downloaded over the past month and they kick ass.

Its just a shame they blocked Audiogalaxy. Some dick downloaded a few U2 songs and got the whole system blocked.

I still need to get my hands on DJ Tiesto's Dutch Dimension one though....

near the end of live sports broadcasts, such as hockey games, CBC (canada's television/radio station) likes to say something like:
... and any broadcasting or distribution in whole or in part without the expressed consent of the canadian broadcasting corporation is strictly prohibited.

don't know if that falls under what you asked about. but most deejay sets seem to come from european radio stations and i have no idea what their laws are like.


distributing an mp3 that was recorded from the radio is not the same as distributing a tape that a deejay made since the radio mp3 rights probably belong to that particular radio station.

Of course it's illegal. Any un-authorised distribution or broadcasting is against copyright laws. The radio station has a license to broadcast tunes, that doesn't automatically give anybody else a right to copy and distribute them.

But I don't think record companies are too bothered about it though, they've got more important things to worry about like distribution of full singles and albums which would otherwise generate income.

hehe, it's not even legal to spin our records in the first place. Luckily the producers view it as free promotion.

Because written on every record is "public broadcast is illegal" and not only are you broadcasting it, you're getting paid for it.

i dl about 200-400megs every other day from my uni's t3 line....i just did so too hehe...been doing it for like 2 years even since i was in another smaller college....(there i used AG extensively but i actually got cought...no consequences)

there are ways of running AG...i believe that i ran an FTP program off a Zip 100 disk, so it may be that you may install the AG or copy al the AG onto the ZIp disk or CDRW and run AG from there...i'm not sure it can be done...but why not give it a try.
