Ti Desktop vs Ti Snow

Hi All,

I am planning on adding a Virus Ti to the family, and am currently trying to decide between a Ti Desktop and the Ti Snow. I will use it through the USB + Ti Control and am wondering which is best suited.

My main question is that I have heard that working through USB, even the Ti Desktop can only send 2-3 channels. Is this correct? If so, the Ti snow with its 4 part multi and 50 voice poly seems better optomised to work through USB, with lots of processing power wasted on the Desktop unit in that situation. Is this true?? Recommendations?

Thanks in advance for any replies!

Check this thread... I had a similar questions... hopefully it helps a bit. I was trying to decide between a Polar and a Snow, but the consensus was a TI desktop.

Yes, the TIs are limited to 2 stereo or 4 mono channels with the most current "official" OS and 3 stereo/6 mono channels with the beta OS. Fortunately, Virus Control gives you a mixer and the on-board FX are per patch (and pretty good), so you actually have pretty good mixing capabilities within VC and it's not as limiting as one might think.

As far as which model to go with, I've never used the Snow, but it seems to me that the desktop Virus TI has a better cost:benefit ratio. I have a Polar TI and there's no way I'd trade down.

When using Virus Control, does the Ti Desktop unit interface with it as a controller? ie can you change a setting on the Desktop unit, is this change reflected on Virus Control?

There's 2 main things you have to consider.

1. How much will you use the TI? Do you really intend on using more than 4 patches/parts in any given track? I've had a TI for about a year now and have only once used more than 3 patches simultaneously. Don't get me wrong, it's an amazing sounding synth, I just have other tools and don't find myself in situations where I want to extensively use the TI.

2. How do you prefer to work? With or without a mouse? I know plenty of guys who own a desktop TI and just have it tucked away under something and just edit their patches in Virus|Control. If you're more of a software editor, then the Snow might be a better (and cheaper) option.

Yes, you'll see the controls in VC change in real time as you change them on the synth, but not vice-versa of course - the synth's knobs/switches are not motorized.

As far as I'm aware the Snow works in exactly the same way as the Desktop in Virus Control. I also believe there is nothing the Snow can do that the desktop can't do. But the Desktop is much more powerful than the Snow and with the extra knobs will be nicer to use.

As someone else mentioned, many believe that the money saved in purchasing a snow isn't worth the power sacrificed. If you can afford the desktop then I'd go for that. If the Snow is already at the absolute maximum of your budget then its a more difficult decision.

I think the main differnce is desktop has like 16 and snow has 4.

Had the TI desktop a few ago, ended up taking it back for a voyager.
While it was sikk, never really used the desktop control. Cept to morph lfo a few times. Would mostly just use the computer interface.
Also cant see myself using more than 4. Just seems like to much Virus IMO

Trying to decide if i want the Snow or Prophet.
Probally gonna go with Snow.

So in 2010+ then?

For the price - i would go for the desktop (which I did).. Its something like £800 here for the Snow and £1200 (i think) for the TI Desktop so I think its worth the extra push. You wont be disappointed and personally, i think its more useable coz its a larger unit.
