Theremin + house music = something weird
Over the weekend I finally managed to squeeze some time in messing around with my theremin. I figured the basic sounds a theremin can produce, analogue sounding tones of all ranges, would go best with techno and minimal tracks.
The most I could manage to produce were clown whistles and farting sounds coupled with some actual cool basslines. While my lack of practice with the theremin made it much crappier than possible, I am still excited by the possibility of what I can add to mixes with the theremin.
I would suggest anyone looking to really expand their normal dj set while still keeping the tactile feel of djing to invest in a theremin. They take quite a bit of practice but I think the results are well worth it. Also you can get them cheaper than a lot of other dj equipment making them cost effective and they hook up easily into any multi-channel mixer.
Once I get the time and properly figure out how to produce the sounds I want, I will post a mini mix demonstrating some of the possibilities a theremin plus a dj set up can create for those interested.
In the meantime for those interested, check out youtube vids for what the theremin is actually capable of and you can probably imagine sounds you would like to incorporate into a set of your own instead of just relying on samples or producing a song first as opposed to making music real time while djing.
