Paul van Dyk - Far Away (Simon p Remix) ...some advice thanx!
Hi,
just wanted to get some feedback for my remix which is also in the beatport contest of this month. I do not want to win that contest or even to promote my track here. No I do not want that! Vote for your favorite track that should win that contest!
Well I just wanted to post that threat as it is my first real trance production that I ever did and that's why it might be possible to even get some advice for the future especially in the progress of mixing down as you might hear some mistakes in the send in track (on beatport).
don't have any advice to give, but I like the remix.

Advice:
- SLOW down! 140+ BPM was done away in 1998. Dance music now is slower - around 134-138.
- The kick drum sounds weak. I dunno if you used the remix sample, but that sample provided on beatport was just crap. Kick drums should have bass and depth. There are loads of sample CDs with good kick drums. I personally have sampled the best in my collection from songs.
- The percussive samples sound really nice.
- I like how you cut the percussion out of the mix and then put it back in.
- The intro is a litte too monotonous. Try for some harder instruments as it would fit this style perfectly.
- You substituted leads for the the plucks. No. That just doesn't fit well with this song.
- Excellent use of sound FX.
- The 303-ish bass sound gets old - this is due to the structure of the song though.
- You forgot to change the bass from Eb to C Db and Bb in some parts, yet the melody uses those notes in the arpeggio. This contrasts with the bass and sounds discordant. Notes in the current chord should be emphasised i.e. Eb G Bb does not use a C and it sounds wrong in this type of music. You can use C for passing notes, but remember that a passing note is just that - passing to the notes that fits the chord and it should be avaoided in the arpeggio unless it's desired. A great exception to this can be heard in DuMonde's Tomorrow (Moogwai Remix). Moogwai has an arpeggio going on the passing tones and it sounds great.
Hope this helps.
Cheers!

hi,
thanks for the advice - well I made the kick-drum by myself so an amateur Kick-Drum
I actually wanted to take a really dirty 303 sound first like in typical discover releases but that I reached that seweet awesome 303 sound and I was amazed by it.
But your right in the break their should be some more atmosphere, some slight chords.
