Primal instincts vs. The Genius Bar

this story is for anyone who has experienced the ipod sad face - if you have you will appreciate it and if not it probably won't mean much to you, but it's worth keeping in mind if you do own an ipod.

so i've had my ipod go to the sad face a few times, the first time i was concerned but when i went into the mac store they knew immediately that it was corrupted data and a quick restore fixed it up. they showed me how to do it and thereafter i fixed it myself a couple times more.

however the most recent incident last week proved to be more stubborn, however many times i reset it, tried to put it in disk mode and connect it to restore the hard drive it just wouldn't take. one attempt it finally connected in, but when i hit restore the computer wouldn't acknowledge the presence of an ipod.

so i took it to the mac store where the staff member i spoke with was very well appraised to deal with the situation but could not suggest any further measures than i had tried and suggested i speak with The Genius Bar.

after making the appointment and walking around Eaton's for an hour or so i came back and they tried a few tricks but nothing they did worked.

so i headed home frustrated with the situation and not to mention the prospect of shelling out some more hard earned cash for a new unit. i decided to browse online support comments from other users who had encountered a similar situation. some included taking apart the unit, freezing the ipod, disconnecting cables etc., nothing i was inspired to take on. i then came across this thread of people discussing their story of throwing it in rage and fixing it

despite my initial cynicism, upon reaching a comment about "it's broken anyway, what do you have to lose?" i figured what the heck. throwing it like a cricket ball into the soft duvet on my bed it made a thud, i picked it up and hit menu. the apple screen popped up as normal and as it held for about 5 seconds as i expected it to go to sad face again but to my delight the menu came up on the screen. i plugged it in, restored it immediately and now it seems to be working great (as of 10 minutes)

hopefully this will help someone else who encounters the same situation since i know for a fact the software corruption on there is largely due to the long mixes i put on and i'm sure many people on here do too. i i'm curious to know if apple staff are aware but can't advise it due to liablity purposes.

p.s. in my experience this is NOT an effective method for fixing most electronic devices, especially cell phones

I had a similar situation with my iPod brought it in the store, they said it works perfectly, and it did, but after recharging it it showed the sad face again. I brought it in the second time and he just said leave it here for about an hour, we can charge it here to see if it can keep a charge. So it worked until I left. Finally I came back the third time and I told the guy I've seen him twice before already, this iPod is fucked, so please change the battery. He said it was out of warranty, but since what he did didn't work before, he offered to give me a new iPod. It's been a month since I had the new one, and I haven't even tried it out yet lol.
