I'm new to the whole ableton thing. so please excuse me sounding like a novice. I can warp normal tracks (i play tecno and minimal you know the usual) but i really struggle to warp beatless tracks like chillout mixes and poppy indie tracks i want to sample for a mix. Is there a secret way our is it just practice makes perfect??? any tips or hints welcome as i feel i'm fighting a loosing battle..

Warp them alongside a track with a beat.

Ok, how would i do that? do you mean have a track playing whilst warping the beatless track and mark where the beats would be??

Basically yes. Do it roughly at first , then fine tune it afterwards.

One thing tha may help is changing the warp function from "beats" to something else, "texture" or "complex" work pretty well. Live defaults to "beats," which is pretty much shit unless it detects a good solid thump.

Using the metronome totally helps! If you have it turned on and you play the track you are warping, then you can basically hear if the metro is tapping to your beat or slices. If your markers are off then you will hear the metronome be off. Its easy as pie.

If you turn on the metronome, it will represent the exact beat pattern that is being registered by Ableton. If the metronome and the song don't match, then it will not sync up properly to other tracks that are warped properly.

Isn't the metronome more applicable if you had a beat to reference and were already pretty close in respect to bpm?

Yes, but even in a beatless track or sound, it is still made to a bpm and you should be able to hear if the metronome is clicking on time to the sound. If you can beatmatch on turntables or cdj's you should be able to notice if it is close to being on time.

Just delete all markers, leave metronome on, and put 1st marker close to the first waveform, hit play see if it sounds on time, if not adjust that marker till the begining sounds on time, then go through track and just keep listening. For warping I personally always leave the metronome on.
