Toronto Taxi fares set to rise
if you already think taking a cab in this city is expensive .. get ready..
I just wonder whether they would ever lower the fares if oil prices dropped .. something tells me i highly doubt it

Taxi fares set to rise

New taxi fares approved yesterday by city council will soon raise the price of taking a cab ride in Toronto.
But it will take at least until the end of July before all the cabs in the city have their meters changed and tested, according to one city official.
And Councillor Howard Moscoe, who chairs the city's licensing and standards committee, says the process could take as long as two or three months.
For the transition period, cabs that have had their meters adjusted will be charging the new fares. But if you get in a cab whose owner hasn't yet had the meter adjusted, you'll still pay the current fares.
Council approved the new rates without debate yesterday in order to compensate cabbies for the sharp increase in the price of gasoline.
The new fares will increase the price of a five-kilometre trip by 11.4 per cent, while the price of a 20-kilometre trip will rise 17.5 per cent. The initial drop rate goes up $1, to $4.
The rate per kilometre also increases. Currently, passengers pay 25 cents for every 170 metres the cab travels. Under the new rates, passengers will pay 25 cents for every 155 metres travelled.
