Qs. about 'Chicane - Live at Palladium' set..

Now I know that its a liveset.. but its not regular set where a DJ just tries to make transition from one track to another as smooth as possible..

He has mixed the tracks itself.. I noticed that certain tracks he played on his liveset are actually longer than original..

So how did he do this? Did he used like his own music samples..? or like he played the same track on two turntables and mixed the same track together repeating the best part and doing the 'tweaking' stuff DJs do on the 'mixer' kept in between two turntables..

Because this liveset is clearly not like any regular Avb/Sasha/Tiesto set where the DJ picks best tracks, makes the tracklist and flow by just mixing from one track to another..

it's a PA set which means he's created all of the tracks himself, and as such is able to do whatever he wants with it beforehand or during or after, depending on what setup he has. For similar with someone you'd know, purple, Rank1 did a liveset of a similar nature at trance energy 2001 which was part of their album on cd/dvd.

Of course he created all of the tracks himself. But how much was he actually doing live on the spot?

I'm also curious actually, I'm assuming he brought along a bunch of synths and performance sequencers and just rocked out... These days you'd ableton it and get the same results but this was before Ableton I think...

This is how a chicane set looked back in the day:

i figure out that some of it is loops (CPU) and some of it is Nick and his band playing live.
Not too much "DJ" equipment involved.

He's shifted to a predominantly analogue live band today, from what I've heard. Live at Palladium sounds like it's a combination of analogue (some of the percussion, notably) and more traditional Live PA performance (a la Orbital, for the classic example).

It always used to make me laugh reading clueless Chicane fanboys on TA about this thread, who insisted it was a DJ set. People would say in confusion "I can't hear any mixing" or "He just plays a few of his own tracks" and the fanboys would say "The mixing is there, it's just so subtle you can barely hear it" or "It's all about the perfect track selection". It's obvious as soon as you hear it that it's a live performance.

Thats pretty amazing, I see a guitar guy, large piano/synth player.. and an electronic flat panel drum set I think that is (I am not sure)? So he is practically mixing tracks, playing piano choons and if that flat panel is not the drumset than he is beatmatching with mixer and turntables and stuff at the same time!

And he managed to pull this amazing mix fucking LIVE is freaking awesome!

BTW PA I guess stands for predominantly analogue, which I have no idea what it means.

Amusing as it would be to let you think that, it isn't the case. "PA" literally stands for Performance Artist and Live PA means a live electronic performance. When I said "analogue" I meant as opposed to digital. Analogue instruments are where the music is played by physical interaction with the instrument, rather than pushing buttons for playback. Chicane's current setup is mostly drums, guitars and live keyboards, rather than sequenced playback, so it is analogue instead of digital.
