CGI killed the sci fi genre IMO. Back in the days, they couldn't just substitute a plot with 2 hours of flashy special FX, so when they did action scenes, they put more effort into them, made them count more, and had better plots surrounding them. That's a pretty sad thing too, because CGI should enhance story telling by allowing film producers to explore aspects of cinematography that were previousely uncharted because of the limitations of traditional filming. It should be a tool, not the whole fucking basis of a film.
At least nowadays we're slowly starting to see some more intelligent use of the technology. I'm thinking of recent films like Cloverfield, which had fantastic CGI, but never overused it - it was only there when it was needed.

You'll get no argument from me. Hollywood has churned out more than its fair share of garbage this year. They usually hold back anything of worth for the Fall, so it will be fresh on the minds of the Oscar voters.
So much time and money is dedicated to CGI that there is very little room for character development or acting. Don't get me started on this Hero fad.
