SCAMMERS are pretending to be hired hitmen in text messages aimed at extorting thousands of dollars from their victims.
The spam messages warn the recipient that they have been targeted for death - but will be spared if they pay up.
A typical message reads: “Someone paid me to kill you. If you want me to spare you, I’ll give you two days to pay $5000. If you inform the police or anybody, you will die, I am monitoring you.”
Detectives in Western Australia say the fraudsters also provide payment details and an email address to their victims.
“These SMS messages to mobiles should be ignored and (we) stress that money should not be sent nor contact made with the scammers,” a spokesman said.
“The latest scam follows a flood of spam emails requesting money through romance scams with the promise of marriage and payment of large sums of money as a result of an international lottery or death of a distant relative.”
Officers would not say if anyone had already handed over cash in the hitman scam.
The spokesman said anyone who had received one of the text messages should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. |
