Read This! Canadians Know More About American History Than Their Own: Study

I scored 55% on the quiz. Don't guess the questions where you don't know the answer for a more accurate score. Just click on 'next question'.

This is also by no means a scientific or sociological study so take it with a grain of salt.

Canadians Know More About American History Than Their Own: Study
Tuesday July 1, 2008
CityNews.ca Staff

It's the day to celebrate all things Canadian, but according to a recent study we appear to know more about the history of the nation of the Stars and Stripes than we do about our home and native land.

The survey, conducted by Ipsos-Reid for the Dominion Institute in the format of a 20-question quiz, asked a number of historical questions about the two nations. The 1,024 people polled answered 47 percent of the questions pertaining to America correctly and got only 42 percent of the questions about Canada right.

Not all of the questions referred to historical facts and a query on current heads of state provided the most telling results.

When asked who the current head of state in the U.S. is, 75 percent of respondents correctly answered President George W. Bush, but only 21 percent correctly identified Queen Elizabeth II as the Canadian head of state.

The question that got the best results had to do with our first prime minister and the year of Confederation. Sixty-one percent of respondents correctly identified Sir. John A. Macdonald as our first PM and 61 percent correctly chose 1867 as the year of Canadian Confederation.

To read the full results of the survey, click here (.pdf).

If you're one of the apparent minority of Canadians who has a firm grasp on the important aspects of our nation's history, you have reason to brag, but are you well-versed in the finer points of Canuck pop culture?

Do you know which Canadian inventions are now used around the world? Or can you define the Canadian tuxedo?

Here are a few questions from the Macleans Canada Day quiz:

* What city in Canada was named the most multicultural in the world by the United Nations?
* Which beer company marketed their top-selling beer with the slogan "I am Canadian?"
* Which Canadian comic sent a resume to the Carol Burnett show when he was 10 years old?

Click here to take the entire quiz.

that stat is easily true. When it comes to american history and geography, even when watching game shows, i'm amazing at how with little formal training i'm able to answer a question that an average iq person from the states gets wrong, despite them growing up with this general knowledge.

without the assistance of Google or Wiki .. I believe the answers are:

1. I don't know, but I assume J.A.M. is in there? Sir Wilfred Laurier.. and I'll guess Sir Robert Borden just because I think he's on the $100 bill

2. Sir John A. MacDonald

3. 1867 it became a Dominion of the British Empire. I think it formerly became a country in the 1960's .. my guess 1964

4. Upper and Lower Canada?

5. Kanata? If I'm right credit the Canada Post commercials lol

6. General James Wolfe and Marquis de Montcalm .. Wolfe presently lies at Westminster Abbey in London (bonus points?!)

7. I think it actually had a few.. Frontenac and York come to mind

how did I do?

Very good! Borden and Laurier were not fathers of confederation but were in fact Prime Ministers. Laurier was prime minister at the turn of the 20th century.

Canada became the dominion of canada on july 1 1867 when it formally became a country. I think you were thinking of the canadian flag being inaugerated in 1965.

I did not know wolfe was buried in Westminster Abby. Nice one!
