i bought a new laptop a couple days ago b/c it was such a good price at Best Buy, but I haven't opened it yet b/c i'm wanting to read more reviews on it and hear other peoples opinions.. there is a 15% restocking fee if i open it so it stays sealed for now...
Gateway M-6846 - 15.4 screen, 1.8GHz processor, 4GB RAM, 320GB HD for $723.99 and then the $279.99 service plan... (im going to Iraq again so i need a new comptuer for the trip and the service plan will cover all accidents except for submersion in water)
anything better out there for that price or is this a POS in a box i bought and i need to be weary???
i already talked to Ben about this and value your great opinions..

si and non in a way.
it looks like a good price. the one thing i am suspect is the shared video memory. i am one who likes the video memory seperate from the physical memory.

A 1.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo is better than a 1.8 GHz Celeron for example. In other words, I was hoping you'd post what you did - that's good. Overall, it's an okay laptop. I don't know if it's good value as I'm not in touch with the American market.
And yes, the more RAM the better. Although if you're using XP (which I recommend you downgrade to) then 4Gb is a bit excessive as 32bit version of XP will only make use of 2Gb of it. That's not a problem though.
Edit: As long as you're not playing games on it, it should do everything you're probably hoping it will.

Vista is sluggish, it looks shit and fruity, and lots of older software and hardware won't work with it. It's a total memory hog, and it won't ever become the industry standard OS. It won't be long before we start seeing glimpses of Windows 7. Vista will in all likeliness eventually be cast aside just like Windows ME was.
XP Pro is about as stable as a Microsoft product has ever been and uses fuck all memory in comparison. Everything will run A LOT quicker, even if all your RAM isn't being used.

First of all, that extended warranty plan is an absolute ripoff. You already have a 1 yr manufacturer warranty, and the way technology prices keep dropping, you will likely be able to buy an equally powered laptop 3 years from now for the price you paid for the warranty alone. It's not worth it.
If you insist on having a 3 year warranty, I found a MUCH better deal for you. It's $300 cheaper AND it's faster than your machine:
Just make sure you uninstall all the messenger programs and other junkware Dell bundles with most PCs. Once you do that, it will be blazing.

Agreed unless you really reckon there is a 1/3 chance of you totaling it lol!!!
The L2 cache is memory on the processor which has a lot lower latency than ram. Basically higher the better but after a point is pointless. (if thats what you were meaning)
Otherwise is kinda complicated but a duo is a very decent chip.
