Thumbs up Trust fund kids alliance

Inspired by Barbina's whining...

I have to say that my parents have paid for almost everything I've done, including college and supporting me a bit during my stay in an apartment on my own back in Fort Worth (though I also had a job during that time). But I would say that their paying for a lot of stuff has had a negative effect on my character, because I'm not as self-reliant as other people I know, don't save very well, and often find myself being "entitlement-minded," so to speak. I don't blame them for the poor choices I've made, since they have always encouraged me to work hard and learn to do something that would allow me to provide for myself, but I'm still trying to overcome being used to other people paying for stuff without any effort on my part and learning to live according to my means.

So, any other "spoiled" kids out there who want to admit it? What effect do you think it has had on you?

My bf is spoiled, and though he's a better man than every other guy I know, it's definitely affected him socially. I love him all the same though!

my parents were on welfare (due to age/health) - so I had to take spoiling of me into my own hands. I got my first "real" job at 19 and have been living independently ever since. I had to pay for all my toys from my own pocket - apartment then a house, synths & other gear, lexus, bmw, partying, oh.. and bills. I would say for someone who did not have mommy and daddy backing me up, I did ok It made me appreciate what I have more.

My family is one of contrasts really. But my dad could have spoiled me and paid for everything but I didn't want that.

I've worked or been at uni since I was 16. Starting at 5am at the weekend for £3.14 an hour while still at school. Managed to save nearly £2000 ($4000) before I went off to uni that way at 17.

Then every summer (bar one when I couldn't find a job which was depressing as fuck) I've worked every week between uni years, and started work before my last uni course was officially over (did my final project 2 weeks early to allow me to).

I paid my way through uni even with sponsorship and working every summer came out with debts but they are mine I pay them.

All that makes me sound like some ultra motivated person but I'm not really, just don't like hand outs. It's just a question of self respect. My uncle had the sons of a guy worth around a billion us dollars they work as cleaners for their money....

I'd say it's fine using parents for fall back when you can't manage on your own but they shouldn't sponsor your laziness because you just plain can't be fucked working for what you want.

Yeah, as much as I sometimes think "God I wish my dad was still around to help me out", I know I wouldn't take my education/life as seriously if I wasn't doing it on my own.

I'm spoiled as fuck, but I don't think of it in the same way as it seems you might be for this thread.

My parents have always done everything they could to give me everything I needed, and most of what I wanted - so long as it was within their reach, and if it wasn't, they did everything they could to teach me how to get it on my own.

When I wasn't sure I was ready to go to school and just needed to get out and see some of the world (when I went to the Netherlands/backpacked Europe in 2003), they supported me. When I wanted to drop everything and go on Phish tour, they let me go.

As far as material things go, they've given me all the financial support they could manage, and have often surprised me with excessive or extravagant birthday/Christmas presents, but I wouldn't call myself spoiled in that sense. When it comes to having parents who've pretty much proven time and time again that they would do anything just so I could be happy, however, I'm spoiled as fuck - and often times feel guilty because I know there aren't a lot of people who have had it as good as I have in that sense.
