Looking for others opinions. Why is it to be succesful as a DJ you have to be producer these days? People will go on and on about how they love a DJ and want to see him only going by their work, or because the tunes a producer creates, it automatically makes people say they love them and want to see them live. A good producer does not make a good DJ and vice versa, so why do people always make that link?
I'm sure there are many amazing DJ's out there, who may be better than these so called "gods" that everyone loves, but since they don't produce anything, they're somehow not as good in the public eye.

Some DJs that do their own tracks will have those tracks before anyone else does, so in order to hear them you must see that specific DJ. But this does not happen often.

i agree, but in most cases i believe that the public has a higher respect for a producer because they are viewed as a true artist. to be able to produce a song that many people will enjoy says a lot. whereas, just to be able to put these "good" songs together into a set isn't as big of a deal. that goes for any musical talent: if you can play the guitar well, that's ok...but if you can play the guitar well enough to be able to write you own music for crowds of people to enjoy, now that's an artist. my 2 cents.

Here's a thought: Djs strive to find the latest and greatest tracks to spin. It's a race to spin something first and have the crowd go apeshit.
If you can produce these tracks, you can play them first, and have them sound just like you want. I don't think you need to be a producer to be sucessful, but it helps. If people see your name on a label and like what they hear, they will look for you to be in their area so they can hear you spin. It's all about marketing.

Producers own! Without them, there would be no music! DJing is easy to learn, but not Producing!
Come on people, there would be no DJ's without producers. The DJ is totally dependant upon producers for material to DJ.

The producers create the language, the DJ's tell the stories.
I think that producers alone don't get enough credit.

true, dj's wouldnt be around without producers.. but it would work the other way around too..
which is why most producers dj too
i think its the DJ's that dont get the credit (when they dont produce) as has been shown by matt hardwick. i seriously think this guy is the best DJ in the world. any genre u care to name and he can play it and make it sound good... but hes not a worldwide phenomena because he hasnt released masses of tunes.
the same went for scott bond up until last year when he started getting around a bit.
either way, the djs are happy being djs and the producers are happy producing, and those that do both are just richer
