Chatty people

I've always found it weird that people always regarded women as being more talkative then men, when it's clearly just a stereotype1. One of the hypothesis (I apologise in advance for the bad - but useful - puns that will follow), explains that this may be so because women are seen as insideful creatures, rather than insightful creature, so men would rather get into her insides than into her insights... so, if she's talking, she's already talking too much.

Today, I confirmed that this is the case, specially among male chauvinists. We were talking about a really hot (and incredibly intelligent) girl I had just met, and whom they were already acquainted with. Her only fault, they said, is that "she talked way too much". I failed to see that as a problem (hell, she's got interesting stuff to say), but I regarded it as the norm.

What puzzled me, however, is that I've found more and more women complaining about chatty guys. As I expected, this isn't a simple gender difference, but... I still failed to understand. Why would you find a talkative person less attractive solely because of their (somewhat clumsy) communication skills? I'd love to be around talkative people, as long as they had interesting stuff to say.

1 If you read (or worse yet, bought) "Men come from Mars and Women from Venus", I'm sorry, but even though silly ideas do die hard, the previous link has some info on why there isn't a clear-cut difference.

talking a lot isn't always a bad thing. it's all about the content of your discussions, and it's been my experience that most women talk about the dumbest shit ever.

i prefer talking with men. also, i definitely think women talk more than men simply due to the fact that women are naturally detail oriented people.

When women talk they sound like a machine gun. And they go bababaabababababaaa-bababaaa!

I don't talk much, and I like it when others don't either. Not to say I don't enjoy a good conversation, but I don't like the idea that you're supposed to talk all the time. Sometimes I will not talk at all and people (especialy girls) interpret that as me not liking them or feeling uncomfortable, etc. Ironically, that usually means I feel forced to talk for nothing, which is precisely what I do when I'm uncomfortable. Looking back, my best relationships have been those where I could always communicate very efficiently with the other person without saying a word.

I don't know who talks more on the whole. I wouldn't be surprised if men talk more in situations when both sexes are present, since men often try to "dominate" conversations.

It seems pretty obvious from my experience that women talk far more when they're in a group composed mainly of women, a lot more than men do in a group composed mainly of men.

Herein lies the problem. how many chatty people do you know that have interesting things to say most of the time. If my friends and i decided to get really hammered one night and then play with some very sharp knives and a collection of ancient samurai swords, then in the morning i could count the number of chatty interesting people i know on the remaining fingers on my remaining limbs. now honestly im not all that interesting myself all of the time, but at least i dont keep yapping my mouth.

yea you're right. i should have said that "being chatty" isn't a bad thing. talking a lot to the point where people try to avoid conversations with u is horrible. my uncle's wife is like that. she starts stories within stories and u can't escape. she is one of those.

i just straight up interrupt her and say, "sorry i have to pee" and exit stage left lol

I agree. If someone is interesting, I'll listen to them all day. Seems like women talk about trivial stuff that guys don't care about a lot, or stuff that's only interesting to them assuming it will be interesting to us too.

Interesting point, Brian. I can't type much now, so I'll get back to that later

Well, I think we'd then have to resolve on what interesting is. Let's call form how something is told, and substance what is told, the content itself. Do you agree with me that there are some people that can make the form so interesting, that there can be no substance whatsoever in his words, but you'd still be amused?
