Forgive the cheesey album cover and comprehensive 'tounge-in-cheek' write up, we do this with all our cd's lol! Our first effort of ableton live with some cuts and loops here and there, no FX though. Still learning that one!
After unfortunate delays and some unforeseen ‘red-tape’ legal issues, Hansen and Gibbs are proud to present their debut Ableton Live album, Counterpoint.
Counterpoint kicks off as one might expect from the boys at Clifton Garden studios......dreamy.
The soothing vocal of Bajka falling over the chilled ‘Snowflakes’ sets a wonderful tone and provides an introduction that is sure to ease the pain of the ever increasing petrol prices. This vocal carries forward into Alex Dolby’s perfect remix of Oliver Koletzki’s ‘Music from the Heart’. A dreamy concoction of boppy bass and slippery synths is the order of the day on Oliver’s menu.
Quiggers’ remix of Dark Star features an unknown, somewhat moody, pianist. His aggressive use of chords represents a deep and troubled young man, possibly affected by rising interest rates and plummeting house prices.
Hansen and Gibbs are pleased to welcome back Mr. Vermeulen to contribute towards this groundbreaking mix. His constant quality production does not go unnoticed and the prog duo remain thankful, in this case for introducing a poignant, punchy feel to ‘counterpoint’.
Kasey Taylor, owner of record label ‘vapour’, has taken a break from the office to squeeze a fruity, furry, flavoursome refreshment in the name of ‘peaches’. A hard, dark stone in the centre of an otherwise, soft and gentle progression makes this particular ingredient one to remember.
The mix takes on a more techy sound with the likes of Cid Incorporated’s ‘sister, and Paul Harris and Steve Mac’s ‘you’. The two tracks work in perfect harmony taking the listener forward effortlessly to meet with Gregor in track 10. Gregor greets the listener with pleasure, providing pain relief, with the aptly titled ‘painkiller’. The duo are clearly not content to simply settle for playing a possible tune of the year by itself. Here, they have utilised the melody from Guy J’s ‘Under Pressure’ and teased the listener into submission. The breakdown is played in its entirety only for ‘Painkiller’s’ rip roaring bassline to reappear with vigour.
Without time to draw breath, Sebastien San’s ‘Rising Sun’ is gently layered over ‘Painkiller’ before the summery kick and bassline emerge. 5 minutes, of what can only be described as controlled chaos ensues, before the diabetic’s nightmare ‘Sugarhigh’ creeps its way into the forefront.
No insulin will be provided here however, instead a breakdown filled with subtle key changes to take the listener into a frenzy.
Jay Lumen conducts the tribal beats in this West Indian encounter, entitled ‘calypso’ before ‘sly detector’ stealthily shifts its way on the scene with its ever so prominent bassline, driving the track to windy synths.
A caffeine injection is given with the penultimate track ‘Friday Coffee’, with its warm layers, gentle synths and epic key changes; it is a more then suitable build up to the finale.
Francesco Pico has gone to work on Pole Folder’s & Miss Shelley Harland’s epic ‘Radio 101’. An awesome track to sum up an incredible melodious 92 minutes. The therapeutic vocal from Shelley is fitting to wrap up ‘Counterpoint’ leaving the listener with an uplifted, trouble free mind set.
Hansen and Gibbs have once again pushed the boundaries of creativity.
You might be wondering what on earth ‘Counterpoint’ means! Well to put it simply it is the technique of playing a melody or melodies in conjunction with another.
In more ways then one, the boys have done exactly that!
