(Your) Children and passing on music tastes

If you have children in the future, do you see yourself attempting to conciously influence their taste in music?

For example, psy-trance act Eskimo, son of John Ford, released his first album aged 17 on his Dad's label Phantasm. He was probably listening to psy at a very early age.

Also, a guy I know is Raja Ram's nephew, and has spoken about Raja trying to introduce him to all kinds of music at a young age.

Personally, my parents didn't ever say "listen to this", but I was exposed to all their music on the radio and in the car anyway, though I don't think it's influenced me much because my parents were only ever into rock music and I'm mainly into electronic.

I can certainly envisage myself playing all kinds of sophisticated EDM to my kid at age 10 and getting angry should they not appreciate it.

I'd love to pass on the classics to the next generation.

My parents seldom listen to music.. like have that free time and just listen to music.. but whenever they do.. they are still hungup on the oldies which were popular when 'they' were young..

So I guess when I have kids I would still be listening to old trance sets and bitch why its not like that anymore.. and force my kids to listen to old Oakie sets..

I wouldn't say influence, I would say stimulate. I grew up on prog rock, but my mom only ever listened to ELP and King Crimson - can't ever remember her listening to anything else. So there wasn't all that much room for my tastes to devellop. It wasn't really a very musical environment.

If I ever have kids, I'm going to make sure I have a huge album collection they can browse through, and I definately want to encourage them to play music.

I think musical tastes evolve with age.. what you think? You are bound to like pop with bang bang bang when you are 16.. and ambient comes much later on in life.. you cant make 15 year old appreciate/or love ambients.. its too slow, quite and boring for them.

i liked ambient as 15, but yes i found it myself and no one tryed to push it on me. my dad bought me my first psy-CD tho by Man WIth no Name. I was shocked tho it figured, he was in a crazy CD shop looking for something like Prodigy as I said wanted that.

If my old man would have bought me Earth Moving The Sun ten years ago, I'd call him right now and tell him just how much I love him.

A couple I'm friends with claims they are going to buy their kids decks at age 10 so that by 18 they can be ready to rock the shit out of clubs.
