I think my soundcard died

I haven't thrown in the towel just yet, but I am about to pull out my own teeth.

I have an EMU 0404 PCI card, for the record. It was working perfectly for the longest time, minus a few times when audio would magically disappear and I would reinstall drivers, etc.

Yesterday, I listened to music whilst I studied.

Today, I get home from a long day's work and return to an audio-less computer. Out of the blue... bam... it's gone!

Oh, there is sound registering from the meters. Every meter imaginable will jump away while I stare at the screen deaf as a post.

I reinstalled drivers...
I installed a patch for the PatchMix DSP software...
I have used the system restore tool twice...
I have searched for the latest drivers from the vendor... their website has slowed to a crawl, and their download page for the latest driver is not fully loading (It loads until the software agreement, and then stops and will not continue)...
All the connections were checked...
I tested both my headphones and my monitors...

Then I discover that MIDI is no longer working either...

I run through my control panel and thumb through the sounds and audio devices -- the appropriate hardware is flagged as working. The device manager is still sitting the same as it has been yesterday and before. Basically, the EMU-0404 is activated and my legacy sound card is deactivated just as it should be.

It's not rocket-surgery... but I need to listen to music, and I have therefore activated my old soundcard and am using that until the problem is fixed.

It's disturbing to see that my MIDI isn't working either. It is like my Radium isn't even plugged in (which I checked, btw).

Is taps appropriate?

[/rant]

Hmmm... man, that sucks. Is there another computer you can check it on? Since your other soundcard works fine, that indicates it's not a few things. The only thing I can think of to diagnose is to see if it works on another computer. Hopefully someone else here is smarter than me to check for sure. Sorry to hear that man.

As Ray said the only thing you can do to diagnose whether your card is dead is trying it on another computer...if that works...it just might be some "microsoft ghosts" trying to get you crazy

sorry to hear that if it's really dead

First. Are you on XP and of so what service pack?

Second, it is always best not to just have the second card (onboard audio?) deactivated in the BIOS as it can still cause conflicts when only deactivated in windows.

Third, get the latest driver from EMU (older drivers might not work with new service packs), uninstall all soundcards, restart, then install the EMU from scratch using the latest driver and patch for the mixer.

Fourth, try a different PCI slot and clean the EMU's PCI contacts.

Hope this helps.

I'm using XP-home SP2 ...

Maybe I'll fetch enough freetime this weekend to employ your suggestions. I'll uninstall and re-install the 0404 in another PCI slot.

Thanks for the help... much appreciated.
