Rented a Xone:92

cmay119 and I rented a 92 for 5 days, here are my thoughts about the mixer, Chris will tune in shortly I'm sure.

Coming from Chris' DJM400, there's really no comparison. The Xone is the superior mixer vs. the Pioneer DJM.

The sound quality is noticeably better, which I was not expecting. The 4 band EQ is a dream. The faders are buttery smooth and I like the fader curves better too. The cue system is more flexible than the Pioneer. The build seems more solid. The filters are amazing. The list goes on.

It's the total package really. I just don't see a value in a DJM800 anymore. Everything is better on the Allen and Heath.

If you're interested in the cover for the mixer, check out www.styleflip.com. It looks really cool in person, I'd love to customize mine.

Old setup... (and my cat)

EDIT: Just to be clear, the entire DJ setup is cmay119's, my basement and receiver/speakers.

Everything Dan has said is true. The Xone is in every way the superior mixer (Unless of course you absolutely need effects, than this mixer isn't for you). I've been playing with the thought of getting one for a long time, but commiting that kind of money to something at this time is pretty much impossible for me.

I couldn't believe the night and day difference between this and the 400. Honestly, going into it, I thought :92 was just going to allow for more control with EQ'ing (4 band vs. 3 band), and possibly better sound quality.

Wow, how truely bad I was underestimating this unit. It's fantastic! As Dan has stated, the faders are buttery smooth, and the curve on them seems to be A LOT more precise. The 4 Band EQ (as expected) allows for superior blending, especially on longer transistions. Although, I've only just started playing with the Filters & LFO, I find them to be a lot more interesting to play with than that of the effects on the 400.

The really big thing I like about this mixer however, is the queing system. the knob system they have implemented for it, is by far A LOT easier to work with, to the button system on the 400 (something that has always been a shortcoming of the 400 in my eyes).

Though, I know we are really comparing apples to oranges here ($500 Mixer vs. $1600 Mixer), I still feel the comparison is relevant when I consider upgrading. The 400 still represents quite a bit of what I would be expecting if I were to move to an 800. And I have to admit this 92 has stolen my heart. Though, I'm still trying to stay somewhat open-minded about the 800 as I've never used it. I now more than ever think the 92 is the best mixer for me.

P.S. Dan, get yer damn cat away from my shit!

I agree with everything you've said here really - currently my ideal setup would be a Xone:92 (for features and filters) and an EFX1000 (for fx) - that would beat a DJM800 imo (although it would be nice to have a bitcrusher). I've got the EFX, now I just need the Xone

But a pair of CDJ1000s are higher up on the list, as is a load of studio hardware - tbh I don't feel upgrading from my DN-X1500 would really give me that much, so I'll probably just wait until it falls apart before I upgrade...

I don't really think the mixer is THAT vital a part of your setup (although I'm sure people will disagree here) - once it can do the basics (decent eq, cue section and FX send/rtn loop), it's down to the rest of your kit to provide the rest of the features IMO. People who are really serious about FX can get much better and more flexible FX in an external unit than in a mixer, which they can then also take on the road with them... I wish the VF-1 wasn't so expensive though!

There was a point when I was quite serious about going down the route of designing & building my own FX, but after a 4 year degree course in electronics it's the last thing I want to do now lol

I'll just carry on hoping I turn up and find a Xone:92 at as many of my gigs as possible

Don't be crazy. Serato is awesome with CDJs.

I can understand that. I like the aesthetic of turntables and Techno, but I love the accuracy and extra features that CDJs have but they're super fucking expensive.
