fao: people who know about pc hardware

so I just built myself a new pc because it was time to upgrade. everything seems to be working smoothly except for one thing -- my pc won't shut off completely. I can restart the computer just fine, but when I hit shut down, it goes through its normal "windows is shutting down screen" and it seems like everything does shut down correctly. I can hear the hard drive turn off, the monitor loses signal, and the mouse and keyboard shuts off, but all the fans inside are still running.

at this point, if i push the power button the computer boots up as if it was shut down like it should. when the computer is "shut down" the power LED on the case is off, but the hdd LED is on with a solid light. if i click the mouse, the red light on the bottom turns on until i let go of the click.

i have 64-bit vista, but i don't think it's a driver issue because i reformatted the pc and even before installing a single driver it still happens. i'm not too familiar with working in the bios, but in the power settings all the "wake to xxxxx" settings are disabled.

cor version: when i shut down pc, everything shuts down but fans stay on. wtf is it.

Are you sure it's shutting down and not going into hibernate mode? Hibernate makes everything turn off except the fans..

If it isn't a problem with your OS settings, it's probably something wrong with the motherboard. Post your question here and you'll get some better answers:

I'd highly suggest deleting the system32 folder (sometimes it's hard to find as Windows likes to "hide" the folder but a quick search should bring it up). It's the folder that constantly tracks your internet traffic and will subtlety accrue spyware which severely slows down your system. It may also have a malicious trojan in it that isn't allowing your computer to shut down properly. It's one of the first things I do whenever I reinstall Windows, delete system32.

Apparently when Vista "shuts down," by default it can really just go to sleep on you and not really shut down all the way. Try this:

Are you fucking stupid? Hibernate turns everything off, but saves the contents of memory to the hd for resume at a later date or time. No matter which option you choose, it shuts everything off except in standby/sleep mode memory still has power as this is needed to keep the memory state.

ugh too many fucking dumb people on these boards giving shit information about computers.

Zoso: if EVERYTHING is shutting off but the fans, that has nothing to do with being in standby/sleep mode. See above.

Duly noted, good sir. I'll confess my Vista experience is very limited, and my handy O'Reilly book on Vista is at home today.

You have probably the power connectors hooked wrong. Check the wireing and double check with the manual. Then check it again.

Yea. I'm thinking when you plugged the power switch from the case into the mobo pin you did it wrong.

Reseat them connections sir!

I am just tired of people giving stupid bullshit advice like that. Especially with computers. His type of advice is the primary reason we have so many fuck all problems with "pcs" and shit not working with the advice given. I hate the perpetual spread of misinformation about electronics in general and more specifically computers. It leads to shitty "support" from others that think they know what they are doing. This in turn creates a disdain for the industry. Geek Squad is a fucking great example of this problem. Clueless fucks "working" on computers and "fixing" them for a fee. Shit people doing something they know shit about.

Also I didn't mean to come off that you were stupid, as your suggestion was merely something you found online and thought it might help. And tbh it is a good one, as that annoyed the shit out of me when I had vista as beta. I just was too fucking lazy to find a fix. Was easier just to hit the arrow. lol

i will definitely double check when i get home, but would that still cause problems even if it's Vista shutting down the computer? (not me manually pushing the button to turn it off)
