i now u might not want to hear this, but the best plugin to tell what a key is is prolly your brain mixed with a keyboard.

and it helps to know the circle of fifths

Please tell me that English is your second language.

The plugin you want is called a "quarter-inch." You instantiate it into your soundcard's headphone jack. At the other end of the cable attached to the plugin is a C-shaped thing with two large circular foam discs attached to it. Place the two large circular foam cups on the other end over your ears (i.e., the flappy things on the side of your head that you weren't using during English and Grammar classes).

If you named the DAW you work in that would be a help

Anyway, id recommend watching videos like this Point Blank one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHzG0pboQLk

theres a about 4 or 5 videos there, all relating to chords, scales, how to make a bassline to fit, what key a track is in - they break down a few popular tracks so you can see whats going on - very very useful stuff

I messed around with chord/scale plugins for a years not understanding what the funk was going on
When you study a little bit of music theory its actually easy enough to follow and far better than shortcuts

take it from someone who had zero musical training, your better off learning a bit of this stuff, makes all the difference

Really useful when you're auditioning sounds, stick it on your master channel. Not 100% accurate but pretty good.

As others said, your best tool will be your ears...

If you're a logic user then there's a great new feature which means, you'll never play the wrong key again

Granted, it's not going to help you do anything original or make you in to Phillip Glass at the press of a key, but I think as a learner (or like myself, someone that sucks as music theory) this can be useful to learn with:

http://www.logic-cafe.com/lc/index....er-midi-plug-in

You basically just load select this puppy in the midi FX section of any instrument you have loaded and it will quantise the midi notes to the selected scale.

Although you would need a bit of basic knowledge but it is what I suggest to everyone learning harmony.

That is fucking great. Still looks slightly beyond me (yes, I suck that much at theory) but I may just give it a whirl.

What is great is that it allow you to define the scope. So as a beginner, it will show you the basic chord relationships, and then with the highest setting, it shows all chord, key relationships.

It is advanced enough that it would be able to chart out all the tonal regions of any symphonic work up to say Mahler. I also shows the pivot chords teaching you how to modulate to other keys.
