There's a lot of smart people on here when it comes to computers, and I consider myself smart with it as well, but I cannot figure this one out.

I'm trying to install a SCSI hard drive in a computer, using a SCSI PCI card to connect it to the motherboard.

On bootup, I can see that the bios in the SCSI card detects and sees the Seagate drive. I can see that in my Motherboard bios, it detects the SCSI card, so I have set this as the first boot device.

I was able to install Windows on this hard drive, because Windows can see the drive. After the install when I try to reboot though, I get the message "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key".

The bios in the card is set to enabled, and the SCSI ID is 0, so it is set to boot. That is the default jumper on the drive as well.

I even tryed installing the drivers for the car on the Windows install, to see if that would help, but I still have the same problem when trying to boot with it.

Does anyone have any ideas? I just can't seem to figure this one out!

Did you set the boot priority back to have the SCSI drive as the first boot device? Removing the cd/dvd drive as the primary boot device.

And, if you could not get into windows, how did you install the drives in windows?

Yes I set the SCSI card back to the first boot device.

I installed the drivers for the card during the windows install. You can hit F6 to install SCSI and RAID adapter drivers.

It can see the drive to install it no problem, but I can't boot from the drive for some reason.

Ok, i've had this type of problem before...you are not going to like the answer.

I basically took the drive out, tested it somewhere else, and determined it was faulty and threw it out. It was not a SCSI, but that was the exact sequence of problems I had too. It was a bad sector.

I hope that is not your problem, as I hate for you to throw out a SCSI drive, but if you have another machine to test the drive...maybe try that?

Dan, do some googling on your drive and scsi card.

How new are they? Older SCSI's sometimes need what's called a Terminator at the end of the SCSI cable.

SCSI is very very picky. I highly recommend you post this on a PC forum as we may have a large number of computer whiz's on here - but there is just so much more experience on PC forums.

try anandtech, ars technica, hard forum.

What Bobby said... Somebody just suggested that as a possible solution too. Another suggestion was that you may need a boot disk of some type... Not sure what for, I don't know anything about SCSI. It's so ancient and oh god can everybody stop using it?

I have this posted on PC forums as well, there's several that I use.

The termination for this drive seems to be correct. To have the drive boot, it needs to be SCSI ID 0. The termination on the drive for that is leaving it blank and not putting any jumpers on.

The card self terminates automatically in it's BIOS, at least that's what I've been told my their tech support.

Card: StarTech PCISCSIUW
Drive: Seagate Cheetah ST3146855LW

I'm assuming you have IDE/SATA drives mixed up in there -- only suggestion to you would be to do the initial Windows install with only the SCSI drive having power and then worrying about your other HDs after install

I used to have a similar setup about 7 years ago with a SCSI HD being my C drive and I would do what I suggested above the rare couple of times I did a fresh install.

The only drive I have in this PC is the SCSI drive. Thank you for the help though. I kinda wish I had another drive so that I can have a possible solution to this lol.

I talked to Seagate just to make sure about termination on the drive, and it is set correctly. As far as they are concerned, because I was able to install the OS on the drive, and the SCSI card sees the drive, the drive is fine.

This leaves the SCSI card I guess, and the MB. I looked through all the settings I can think of and everything looks correct.

lol, it wasn't by choice believe me, I'm just trying to make it work

when you do a fresh xp install, you need to load the scsi drivers before you install the os or it won't recognize it.

there's an option i think near the bottom which asks you 'press this to load scsi drivers'...
