I haven't used the MPD32, but I did own an MPD24 for several months. One of the major differences is that the MPD24 has "MPC-style" pads, whereas the MPD32 appears to have genuine MPC pads. That's actually a pretty significant difference because the MPD24's pads do not have the same 'touch' that the genuine MPC pads have. The software is very nicely implemented on the Akai units and the ability to create and store custom templates for your drum VSTi's is excellent.

But, overall, my feeling on these style of controllers is that, while I really like the idea of dedicated controllers to free me from the mouse/keyboard, they aren't really necessary and I did not really use mine as much as I thought I would. I initially used it for roughing in drum parts, which I would then go back and edit/refine in my piano roll/drum grid. I eventually just realized that it wasn't really saving me any time and once Sonar 7 came out with its step sequencer, using the MPD24 was actually slowing me down considerably compared with just clicking in the patterns. YMMV.

One last consideration is whether you're planning on using it for live vs. studio work. If you're considering one for live use, disregard everything I've written. The MPD's (esp. the MPD32) would probably be excellent.

Thanks very much for a detailed and informative reply dude.

It's going to be live for the majority of the time.

Anyone else have any details on this equipment? Or can suggest something similarly priced?

Around $400 or £220

if you want a standard MPC style controller, nothing will beat an MPD32.

if you can bare having less drum pads, you might want to look into a Novation Remote SL Zero. you will get more faders/rotaries on these controllers (I think!). the LCD parameter read-outs make them good in the dark too.

if you're using it mainly for live work though, I would consider an actual MPC. computers just aren't reliable enough, for my liking.

It's going to be for live use.

Anyone got any final words of wisdom before I take the plunge?

Cheers again guys.
