Composing

What does everyone use when they want to just write music?
For me it seems that using a sequencer to compose can be a somewhat cumbersome.

Some may disagree but my reason is that if I just need a sound to represent a particular instrument I spend way too much time with a synth then I need to.

I'm not saying I need realistic sounds, just a quick and easy way to get down musical ideas.

Sing the melody, get it as complete as you can before writing it down.

Or pick up a guitar and play.

Or a hardware synth/keyboard.

For me, composing is entirely separate from the process of choosing sounds, mixing, all that other stuff.

Exactly, thats why when im writing something (usually non-trance) I just want to say "ok some kind of guitar will go here" and then write that bit.
