The music that really counts, that stays with us, is the music we hear in the womb, or at
the very least in our pushchairs. When it comes to writing your first solo album, these
deep, primary emotions naturally rise to the surface. Party de Plaisir is a guided tour
of Teki Latex’s tender years. But very much a man of his times, Teki also draws his
inspiration from club music, starting with the Seventies and working his way to the
present day, from first degree vintage disco, futurist electro pop and indie rap to wild
party music, generational sartorial anthems, standard pop and everything that makes 2007
the most thrilling year in history. In short, this is one hell of a ride in a time
machine.
Like all true pleasures - and all major successes - Party de Plaisir stands out a mile.
It’s such a rare album that failure or “credibility” don’t enter into the equation. Fear
and angst don’t belong in the pop universe. Teki Latex knows it and walks the tightrope
without a safety net, or trucker cap for that matter, to reveal the logic (although in
many ways unexpected) behind his work right up to the present day with TTC, one of the
biggest names in French rap.
It’s no small miracle that Teki Latex and the Gonzales-Renaud Letang duo teamed up for
Party de Plaisir, a little like Timbaland and Justin. Renaud Letang, formerly Jean-Michel
Jarre’s live sound engineer, is one of the most respected artistic directors in France,
with a host of big names to his credit, including Alain Souchon and Manu Chao. Gonzales
emerged from the Berlin underground a few years ago as a hyper-hairy rapper, before
swapping his ironic attire for a pianist’s smoking jacket. He occasionally surfaces from
the intimate surroundings of the cabaret circuit to make the dreams of major stars come
true, in collaboration with Letang. Jane Birkin, Feist, Jamie Lidell and Charles Aznavour
have all benefited from their Midas touch. Teki Latex x (Gonzales + Letang) = Party de
Plaisir.
